Crashed stars are rocks that play a central role in the Shooting Stars Distraction and Diversion. They can be mined to obtain stardust, which members can trade for rewards at Dusuri's Star Shop. The stars can also be mined on free-to-play (F2P) worlds, but only grant half the experience given on members' worlds and the stardust collected has no use for F2P players.

The size of a crashed star decreases by 1 every 7 minutes. The crashed star disappears completely when either a size-1 star has been mined for 7 minutes, when another star crashes on the same world, or when a system update occurs. The skilling success rate and experience gained for successfully mining stardust is the same across all sizes.

The first player to interact with a crashed star will be listed on the notice board in the Observatory on that world. The first player will also receive a star discovery bonus that gives 300 extra stardust as the star is mined. The player does not get any XP for this extra 300 stardust. This mechanism also applies on free-to-play worlds where it serves no useful purpose unless the player intends to purchase a membership at a later date. Discovering another star will result in the bonus stardust count resetting back to 300, even if some bonus stardust from a previous star is left. Players can also see the number of stars they were the first to discover on the notice board.

The effects of mining enhancers like the Varrock armour or Celestial signet do not work on crashed stars to get double the stardust.

The jingle that plays upon discovering a crashed star.

Landing sites

Shooting stars can land in a wide variety of locations across Gielinor's surface. The size of a star when it lands is random, between 6 and 9. The level requirement to mine a star depends on its size.

The probability to succeed on a given mining attempt scales with Mining level according to the figure below. The chance is the same regardless of star size.

Pre-roll

The mining gem drop table has a 1/256 chance to roll on every mining attempt;[1] if the player is wearing a charged amulet of glory, amulet of glory (t), or amulet of eternal glory, the probability increases to 1/64.2.[2][3] If the table successfully rolls, the player may receive an uncut gem or nothing, and in either case can not receive an ore.[4] This neither depletes the rock nor grants Mining experience. The rates shown are for every mining attempt.

  • The skilling success rate whilst mining crashed stars is now identical for all star sizes.
  • Clue geodes are once again obtainable from crashed stars.
  • Crystal shards are no longer obtainable from crashed stars that land in Prifddinas.
2 October 2023
Hotfix

Receiving clue geodes from crashed stars has been disabled in an effort to help server performance.[5]

20 September 2023
(Update)
  • Crashed stars no longer deplete faster when more people are mining them.
  • Player characters will no longer occasionally render behind the crashed star they are mining.
10 November 2021
(Update)

Shooting Stars now have a chance to land in Darkmeyer, as previously intended.

30 June 2021
(Update | poll)

Experience from mining crashed stars have been increased per stardust mined.

24 March 2021
(Update)
  • Shooting Stars should now deplete more slowly when large groups are mining them.
  • Cannons can once again be placed where a Shooting Star would land. However, if a Star lands on it, it will be destroyed and will need to be reclaimed from Nulodion.
  • There is now a chance players might receive additional stardust when mining Shooting Stars.

Trivia

  • If a crashed star lands where a player is currently standing (or upon switching worlds onto a star), the player will be pushed safely out of the way. This does not apply to pets, however, which may stand in the middle of the star after logging in next to one.
