Lava scale shards are the result of using a pestle and mortar on a lava scale, which is dropped by lava dragons and brutal black dragons. Grinding a scale yields between 3-6 shards, with higher Herblore levels yielding a higher average. If the hard Wilderness Diary is complete, this amount will be increased by 50%, rounded down, meaning that players can receive either 4, 6, 7, or 9 shards per scale.

They can also be obtained by using a hammer on an infernal eel, which require level 80 Fishing to catch. Each eel has a 1/8.75 chance to yield between 1-5 shards.

The shards are used as an ingredient to make extended antifires and extended super antifires, requiring levels 84 and 98 Herblore to create, respectively, with 1 shard being used per dose.
