Overview
Magic is a powerful tool in Leagues, offering useful utility, teleports, and combat power. There are many Demonic Pacts which affect spells and powered staves.
Players begin with only access to the standard spellbook, but the Grimoire relic lets the player access all spellbooks and switch between them at will. Some regions allow access to spellbooks by unlocking them; without Grimoire:
Fremennik✓ grants access to the lunar spellbook through the Astral Altar,
Desert✓ grants access to the Ancient Magicks through the ancient pyramid altar,
Kourend✓ grants access to the Arceuus spellbook through Tyss,
Kandarin✓ grants access to the lunar spellbook through the magic cape (requires 99 Magic, unboostable),
- Without Fremennik unlocked, Ourania Teleport and the Fremennik Hard Diary spells are not available.
- Fremennik, Desert, and Kourend provide the materials to build their respective altars in the player owned house. The magic cape can switch to any spellbook the player has unlocked from other regions.
The quest requirements to access each spellbook and all of their spells are unlocked in full upon unlocking their respective region. (Baba Yaga still needs to be talked to to unlock the Ourania Teleport, and the Fremennik Hard Diary still unlocks additional spells on the lunar spellbook)
Certain teleports are disabled due to area restrictions.
Notable training methods
Combat
- The Gemstone Crab in
Varlamore✓ has low defence stats and is an excellent training method for the early game
- Sand crabs across
Varlamore✓, around
Kourend✓, and rock crabs found across
Fremennik✓ can be a non-intensive method for training combat skills at a low level.
- Bandits found in the
Desert✓ are agressive to players wearing Saradomin or Zamorakian items.
Ancient Magicks
With access to Ancient Magicks from Grimoire or
Desert✓, using burst and barrage spells can be used to kill multiple monsters at once in multi-combat areas.
- Dust Devils can be killed with burst or barrage spells in
Kourend✓ and the slayer task area of the Smoke Dungeon in
Desert✓. They require
65 Slayer to kill. They drop runes and other supplies at a decent rate.
- Warped Jellies in
Kourend✓ require
52 Slayer and drop a large amount of hard clues.
- Monsters in the Wilderness slayer cave can be burst with
Wilderness✓ unlocked.
Utility Spells
- Using High Level Alchemy while doing other activities is a good way to gain passive magic experience.
- Superheat Item can be used to obtain bars and save time while smithing.
- Plank Make and Superglass Make from the lunar spellbook can be used to get resources for other skills at the same time.
- Many of the self buffing spells from the Arceuus spellbook can be cast on a cooldown without interrupting other skilling or combat actions, such as Greater Corruption, Ward of Arceuus, and Shadow Veil.
- The Transmute relic spell can be utilised for zero time training with most methods, especially when cast on a large stack of items. This is best used with Larcenist at the gem stalls to double as Crafting experience if not taking
or used on large stacks of runes bought at shops.
Demonic Pacts
The demonic pacts for magic are centred around the four main runes: air, water, fire, and earth. The starting node provides a boost to magic level for each rune that is regenerated when casting a spell. There are nodes to regenerate each of the four elemental runes from casting combat spells, along with an extra affect when they are generated. When regenerated, air runes have a 15% chance to restore 1 prayer point, water runes heal 1 hitpoint, fire runes increase the damage of the next spell by 1, and earth runes increase Defence by 1 for 30 seconds.
There is also a major node that improves the tick speed of powered staves by 3 (1.8 seconds) although it does reduce the maximum hit by 8. Another major node reduces the tick rate of combat spells from a spellbook by 2 (1.2 seconds).
Each ancient Magicks spell has a major node that registers it as one of the main four types: smoke spells can be counted as air, ice spells as water, blood spells as fire, and shadow spells as earth.
The capstone for each rune are also powerful and are as follows:
- Air spells have a +1% chance to max hit for every 1 prayer bonus, this chance is doubled against enemies weak to air spells.
- Water spell hits bounce back to you, healing you for 60% of the damage dealt to your target
- Fire spell hits apply 1 burn (max 5) and bounce to up to 2 nearby targets
- Earth spells deal additional flat damage based on your current Defence level (+1 damage per 12 Defence levels)
Relics
Transmute is automatically re-cast and provides a base of 10 XP per cast, before league modifiers. It can be used to train magic passively while generating resources for training other skills or to sell.
Grimoire unlocks all spellbooks, acts as a book of the dead, and unlocks all prayers, including Augury.
Obtaining runes
Morytania is the only region without a Rune shop. Players will be unable to purchase Soul runes without unlocking either Fremennik, Kourend, the Desert, or both Asgarnia and Kandarin.

Kandarin✓ region unlocked to purchase the Magic cape at 99 Magic (limited to 5 spellbook swaps per day), certain Lunar Spells are accessible.
The Ancient spellbook will only be accessible after unlocking the Desert✓ region. Additionally, to swap spellbooks quickly a player will either need the arcane grimoire from the Grimoire relic, either
Fremennik✓ or
Varlamore✓ unlocked to build an Ancient altar in their player-owned house (along with a Pharaoh's sceptre from Pyramid Plunder), the
Kandarin✓ region unlocked to purchase the Magic cape at 99 Magic (limited to 5 spellbook swaps per day), or to complete the Hard Desert Diary to teleport to the entrance to Enakhra's Temple with the Camulet.
The Arceuus spellbook is available after talking to Tyss in the northernmost part of Kourend✓. Additionally, a larger set of combat and utility spells are accessible to players immediately since A Kingdom Divided is automatically completed.

Notable Elemental Weaknesses
Exploiting elemental weaknesses is a good way to speed up magic training when multi-hitting attacks like burst or barrage spells are not available. The increased damage dealt equates to more experience per cast.
