The Fountain of Rune is a magical obelisk within the ruined fortress south of the Blighted Volcano, which emerged after an underground tremor caused it to erupt from the earth.[1] It provides unlimited runes when casting a spell within its line-of-sight,[2] but no experience will be gained for doing so. Although free players can visit the Fountain, its features are only available to members.

Casting Low Alchemy here is a requirement for the Easy Wilderness Diary.

Teleportation spells can be active whilst near the Fountain, but as it is in deep Wilderness, they cannot be used to teleport out of the Wilderness. Players are also prevented from logging out of the game for three seconds after casting a spell with no rune cost.

According to Movario in Movario's notes (volume 1), the ruined structures around the Fountain are remnants left by the Dragonkin, and traces of energy from the Stone of Jas are present in the area.

Transportation

The quickest methods of reaching the Fountain of Rune are as follows:

A popular low-risk method of getting to the Fountain of Rune by foot is by taking an inventory of uncharged jewellery into a free-to-play world and switching to a members' world when getting to the fountain to charge the jewellery, then switching back to free-to-play and walking back. Members-only bosses and enemies won't appear in the free-to-play Wilderness, with player killers being few and having only low level magic and ranged equipment and no access to ancient spells.

Recharging dragonstone jewellery

The Fountain of Rune expelling magical energy.

Members can recharge their enchanted dragonstone jewellery at the Fountain of Rune, provided they meet the quest requirements to do so normally. Charging amulets of glory requires completion of Heroes' Quest, while skills necklaces and combat bracelets require completion of Legends' Quest. There are no quest requirements to charge rings of wealth.

Each piece of jewellery charged at the Fountain of Rune will receive six teleport charges, rather than the typical four that would be received at the traditional charging location; the only exception to this is the ring of wealth, which can only be charged at the Fountain of Rune, and will receive five charges. Charging a piece of jewellery will charge all applicable jewellery in the player's inventory, as well as those they have equipped, at once. Additionally, while combat bracelets and skills necklaces may be charged in noted form, rings of wealth and amulets of glory may not.

When recharging amulets of glory, there is a 1 in 25,000 chance that one will transmute into an amulet of eternal glory, which provides unlimited teleports rather than the usual six; this also applies to the trimmed variant. When this occurs, the message "The power of the fountain is transferred into an amulet of eternal glory. It will now have unlimited charges." will appear in the chatbox, replacing the standard message for recharging jewellery.

Trivia

  • Due to the unavailability of development tools to create entirely new assets at the time of release, a number of pre-existing assets were combined to create the Fountain of Rune, namely the model of the Obelisk of Water, the shimmering texture of magic trees, the animation for making an infused wand during What Lies Below, and finally the inventory models of standard runes.[3]

"An underground tremor has caused a seam of magical rock to erupt from the earth in a ruined fortress to the North East of the Wilderness. This seam is spewing a force infused with the raw power of magic and anyone standing near the Fountain of Rune will be able to cast spells without using any runes."
