King Black Dragon (Echo) is a more challenging variant of the King Black Dragon that is accessible during the Demonic Pacts League. To fight it the player must carry a wilderness echo orb, which is dropped by the regular King Black Dragon.

Echo King Black Dragon can drop the king's barrage crossbow, which fires 2 bolts at once and can freeze targets.

As the fight does not take place within the Wilderness, blighted supplies cannot be used.

Mechanics

The Echo variant of the King Black Dragon has improved dragonfire abilities and notably does not attack with melee.

  • Standard dragonfire: Fires longrange dragonfire at the player. This cannot be avoided, but can be negated through standard dragonfire protection methods, such as an anti-dragon shield and antifire potions.
  • Explosive dragonfire: Fires a slow-moving projectile at the tile the player is standing on, which explodes on impact in a 3x3 X-shaped pattern, dealing around 15 damage. This can be avoided by stepping out of the way before it lands.
    • This projectile appears identical to standard dragonfire.
  • Shocking breath: Fires at the tile the player is standing on, leaving a cross-shaped 3x3 pattern of electricity on impact for a 3-tick duration which drains all of the player's stats by around 7 every tick while the player remains in the affected area. This can be avoided by stepping out of the way before it lands.
    • Super restores are essential to the fight to restore drained stats, particularly when using Magic, as even a slightly drained Magic skill could put the player below the level to cast their desired spells.
  • Icy breath: Fires at the tile the player is standing on, freezing the player for several seconds on hit and leaving them vulnerable to follow-up ground-targeted attacks. This can be avoided by moving at least one tile away before it lands.
  • Toxic breath: Fires a glob of venom that envenoms the player on contact and splatters to random nearby tiles up to 4 tiles away in venom droplets that also envenom the player when stood on, similar to Araxxor's venom spit mechanic. This can be avoided by stepping out of the way before it lands.
  • Corrupting dragonfire: A pink blast that disables the player's prayers on impact, identical to Vorkath's mechanic. This cannot be avoided.
    • This attack may be used even if no prayers are active.
    • Quick prayers can be used to quickly re-enable prayers after this attack.

If having difficulty reacting to these attacks, moving at least 2 tiles horizontally or vertically between every boss attack will allow the player to avoid all explosive dragonfire, shocking breath, icy breath, and the first venom glob from toxic breath.

After hitting 50% hitpoints, the King Black Dragon will summon four echo black dragons in the corners of its lair, becoming invulnerable to damage while they are alive. These dragons only use long-range dragonfire and melee, neither of which can be avoided by movement. Their dragonfire will require actual dragonfire protection; prayers have little to no effect on them unlike the King Black Dragon's. If the player walks under the dragon or is standing within halberd range, the dragon will stop using dragonfire and try to melee them. This can be used to stack the dragons so they can be killed easier.

The King Black Dragon's AoE dragonfire and shocking dragonfire will damage the echo black dragons, dealing 15-20 damage. Dragonfire damage dealt in this manner has a 3x3 AoE from the affected tile rather than 1x1.

When the last of the echo dragons are killed, the damage immunity lifts and the King Black Dragon enters an enrage phase with the following changes:

  • Attack speed is increased from 4 ticks to 3.
  • The explosive dragonfire attack becomes an X-shaped 5x5 pattern.
  • Shocking breath's area-of-effect now last for 12 ticks, up from 3.
  • Toxic breath now erupts twice, covering a total of 10 tiles per breath.

These changes occur immediately and will affect the breath attacks mid-flight.

Particularly if using melee, the player can find themselves running out of safe tiles during the enrage phase. As the boss has limited attack range, running to a corner of the arena can drag it away from the centre to clean tiles if their damage is lacking.

Drops

King Black Dragon (Echo) rolls the same drops as regular King Black Dragon, in addition to a roll for its unique echo item.
