The stuff is purchased from Honest Jimmy's House of Stuff with 50 pieces of eight from the Trouble Brewing minigame on Mos Le'Harmless. Access to the minigame and shop requires completion of the Cabin Fever quest. "The stuff" apparently contains some questionable and/or toxic content, as it has been banned by the Cooks' Guild of Varrock. However, it does not actually cause any negative side effects when used in brewing.

The stuff is used in brewing when making ales after placing two buckets of water and two barley malt into the fermenting vat. After adding it, the specific ale ingredient and ale yeast are also put in. The odds of brewing a mature ale increases. The chances of ale maturing naturally is 5%, but adding the stuff increases this chance to 64%.^[1] However, using it can cause brewing to take up to 7 days instead of the usual 1-1½ days.
