Ironman Guide/Sailing

Training Sailing on an Ironman is not substantially different from training the skill normally. Due to account limitations, gathering resources for ship and facility upgrades, along with cannonballs, may prove difficult.

Starting off
In order to begin training Sailing, complete the Pandemonium quest to unlock the skill, a raft, and the ability to complete courier and bounty tasks. Trimming your sails and engaging with ocean encounters award some additional passive experience that is useful at the earlier levels. As the player levels up, additional ports will become available, typically awarding more experience for tasks the farther they are from that port.
Completing sea charting objectives award additional one-time experience and can be completed while completing other sailing tasks. These tasks should be prioritised during levelling as much as possible.
- Starting at
4 , complete courier tasks between Port Sarim and The Pandemonium.
- At
5 , the player can accept tasks at Land's End. These delivery tasks award slightly more experience but are substantially further away.
- At
7 , players can accept two port tasks at the same time. While not always available, prioritise getting deliveries to the same ports or deliveries en route.
- Taking two deliveries from Port Sarim to The Pandemonium (or vice versa) effectively doubles the experience gained.
- If two simultaneous deliveries are not available, look for tasks that can be completed on the way. For example, at The Pandemonium accept a task to deliver cargo to Musa Point and Catherby as the former is on the way to the latter. In Musa Point, you can then unload the delivery and get another task.
- If neither of the other scenarios are available, consider accepting tasks where the cargo is at another port. For example, at The Pandemonium accept a task to deliver cargo to Musa Point and accept a task to pick up cargo in Musa Point and deliver it to The Pandemonium. These tasks where the cargo are at a different port than the notice board port tend to award more experience.
- At
10 , deliveries to and from Musa Point are unlocked.
- At
12 , completing the Prying Times quest unlocks the crowbar which is required for additional sea charting steps.
- At
15 , purchase a skiff for 15,000. Equipping the boat with a cargo hold and salvaging hook will unlock shipwreck salvaging. This training method is more AFK than port tasks and awards similar experience per hour to port tasks. When salvaging, the collected salvage can be dropped on the boat for faster experience (rather than going back to a salvaging station); however, Ironmen may find it worthwhile sort their salvage as often as possible. Early tiers of salvage provide useful low level resources and have a rare chance at several useful items.
- All tiers of salvage have the chance to unlock the Sailors' amulet which provides useful, low-cost teleports to several islands throughout the skill.
- Each tier of salvage has their own 1/3000 rare museum salvage finds. Returning these finds also award kudos and antique lamps.
- At
22 , complete Current Affairs to obtain the current duck. This unlocks additional sea charting locations.
- At
30 , the Barracuda Trials (The Tempor Tantrum) is unlocked. Completing the trials awards a flat experience amount per attempt and a one-time bonus experience for completing the trial under the time limit. Consistently completing the Marlin trial in time will award the fastest experience.
Shipbuilding
Several useful core ship parts and facilities will speed up boat movement, unlock new areas, and increase salvaging and trawling rates. The useful upgrades for completing various Barracuda Trials and unlocking areas of the map are listed here.

Intermediate boat upgrades may only provide minor speed or stat improvements, so can be skipped until more prominent upgrades later to save resources. Unless completing bounty tasks, boat armour and health upgrades do not meaningfully speed up experience rates and can be postponed until you begin looking for unique sailing drops from monsters at sea.

Upgrading cargo holds allow for longer trips while salvaging and trawling. Upgrading salvaging hooks will increase your salvaging rates, but are not required to access any salvaging shipwreck. Upgrading trawling nets unlock deeper fishing levels and additional fish. Upgrading cannons, like upgrading boat health and armour, is more important if completing bounty tasks or hunting specific drops from monsters at sea.
Fastest experience
Completing the Barracuda Trials as they are unlocked will provide the fastest experience rates possible. Completing each rank of each trial will award a one-time experience reward. To compete in a trial, the player must use a skiff and have the appropriate upgrades.
| Sailing | Trial | Noteable Unlocks | Other Requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Tempor Tantrum | Barrel stand and whirlpool surprise | Iron helm, oak mast and linen sails | |
| The Jubbly Jive | Captured wind mote | Mithril helm, innoculation station | |
| The Gwenith Glide | Heart of Ithell | Completion of Regicide, adamant keel |
Each trial has three ranks with their own rewards.
- The Swordfish rank, the easiest, awards a key that unlocks a cosmetic outfit, coins, and gems.
- The Shark rank is an intermediate rank that awards a useful facility upgrade option. This is the only "required" rank to achieve as it does lock sailing-specific items behind completion.
- The Marlin rank is the most advanced and most difficult to achieve. Each trial awards a different cosmetic flag that can be attached to the player's ship and displayed.
Shipwreck salvaging
Salvaging shipwrecks offers a more AFK and less click-intensive method for training Sailing. To begin salvaging, players will need a boat equipped with a salvaging hook facility (and preferably a cargo hold). Then, travel to an appropriate level shipwreck and position the boat near the shipwreck. Once in place, the player can operate the salvaging hook and collect the corresponding salvage. After a period of time, the salvaging location will deactivate and the player will need to sail to another active location nearby to continue training.
As the player levels their sailing skill, new shipwreck types become available. It is generally advised to move to the highest level salvaging location as possible for the best experience rates.
| Level | Unlock | Additional

|---|---|---|---|
| Small shipwreck | Unlocks small salvage which has a chance to contain regular and oak sawmill coupons. Additionally may contain the rusty locket museum find. | ||

| Iron salvaging hook | Requires | ||
| Fisherman's shipwreck | Unlocks fishy salvage which has a chance to contain regular and oak sawmill coupons. Additionally may contain the mouldy block museum find. | ||
| Steel salvaging hook | Slightly increased experience per hour as compared to lower tiers. | ||
| Barracuda shipwreck | Unlocks barracuda salvage which contains access to raw swordfish and raw sharks and scroll box (medium). Additionally may contain the dull knife museum find. | ||
| Salvaging station (facility) | After having located and read the salvaging station schematic, the player can build a salvaging station on their boat, allowing them to sort salvage without returning to port. | ||
| Mithril salvaging hook | Slightly increased experience per hour as compared to lower tiers. | ||
| Sloop | Unlocks the sloop boat type which contains two facility slots for salvaging hooks. The additional spot allows for a crewmember to operate a salvaging hook at the same time as the player, (though with reduced experience rates). | ||

Ironman specific
As an ironman training sailing, one of your largest challenges will be obtaining the resources required to both upgrade your ship, as well as gathering unique upgrades for facilities. As such, easy access to milling planks is a high priority, as well as access to metal bars to convert into nails, cannonballs, and keel parts, with ship size necessitating a large amount more resources per tier.
Good objectives to have access to ahead of training sailing would be a reliable access to normal planks, swamp tar/paste, and nails, as well as a decent supply of gold. A decent middle ground is access to Razmire Builders Merchants store after completion of Shades of Mort'ton. Managing Miscellania is also a good source of teak and mahogany planks/logs in order to quickly upgrade your boat and its facilities. Early sailing events and quests reward sawmill coupons to help eliminate costs for early plank milling. For higher level logs, sawmill vouchers obtained from forestry can be a good way to save large amounts of money as an ironman. For runite bars, the player can offer rune platelegs (which are buyable in shops) at the nest in Aldarin to convert them into runite bars.
