Cannonball

Cannonballs are ammunition fired from cannons on a boat during boat combat. On land, the dwarf multicannon can fire steel and granite cannonballs.

Most cannonballs are created at a furnace, using an ammo mould to make 4 at a time or a double ammo mould to make 8. With level 87 Sailing, players can use the forge in Grimstone Dungeon to halve the time it takes to cast a set of cannonballs.

Dwarf multicannon

Dwarf multicannons are often used to attack monsters in multicombat areas and complete Slayer tasks more quickly. They can fire two types of cannonballs:

Item Level Max Hit GE price Notes
Smithing 35 30 272 Requires completion of Dwarf Cannon
Smithing 50 35 N/A Requires either 75 Slayer or 62 Sailing to obtain granite dust from either Grotesque Guardians or the Mad Angel

Ship combat

Additional metal cannonballs for ship-based combat were released alongside the Sailing skill. Firing a cannon awards both Sailing and Ranged experience, though when crewmates fire cannons only Sailing XP is granted. Smithing any type of cannonball requires completion of Dwarf Cannon.

Regular

Regular cannonballs are the primary means of dealing damage to monsters at sea.

Bronze cannonballs can be bought from charter ship shops. Once players have hit 50 Sailing, they may dock at Port Roberts, where they can find a cannonball store run by Iron Bill, who sells bronze, iron, and mithril.

Cannonballs may also be smithed (except for dragon), acquired as monster drops, or stolen from the cannonball stall in Port Roberts.

When actively manned by a player, cannonballs receive an additional Heavy Ranged Strength bonus, applied on top of the standard ranged strength of the cannonball.[1]

Item Level Accuracy Strength Heavy Ranged Bonus GE price
Smithing 5 12 43 15 8
Smithing 20 16 56 30 14
Smithing 35 20 74 40 272
Smithing 55 30 105 50 157
Smithing 50 30 125 65 N/A
Smithing 75 50 157 80 217
Smithing 90 64 201 90 689

  1. ^ Dragon cannonballs are exclusively obtained as drops and cannot be smithed.

Upgraded cannonballs

Chainshot and incendiary cannonballs, which are made from regular cannonballs, can be made of any smithable cannonballs. Smithing level requirements for upgrading cannonballs are the same as for smithing regular cannonballs of same tier.

Chainshot

Chainshot cannonballs deal damage and half the target's movement speed. They are made 2 at a time from 2 cannonballs and 1 Chain

Incendiary

Incendiary cannonballs always inflict burn damage based on the following formula:

Here, the burn damage that is applied to the monster is calculated based on the damage roll, meaning it is calculated before applying the target's flat armour modifiers. This also has the effect that monsters with positive flat armour can be hit a 0 from an incendiary cannonball, but still be burnt by the attack, but only if that attack would have dealt 5 base damage before applying flat armour. After burn is applied, a total of 6 instances of burn damage are dealt to the burnt monster over the course of 30 ticks (18s).

Unlike other types of burn damage, incendiary cannonballs do not use burn stacks to apply their damage. Instead, whenever incendiary burn is applied to a monster, the burn counter for that monster is reset to 6, and if the newly applied burn would be greater than the monster's current burn damage, the old burn damage is overwritten by the new, higher burn damage. This means the burn damage applies as follows:

This has the effect that high burn damage can be sustained by subsequent lower damage dealt using incendiary cannonballs. Because of this, it can be useful to deal the first instance(s) of damage as a player manning the cannon, after which crewmates can reset the burn counter using lower damage attacks. Because the burn damage is calculated based on the base damage instead of the actual damage, these cannonballs can be used effectively against monsters with high flat armour like Veiled kraken, to circumvent their usual damage reduction.

Incendiary cannonballs are made 2 at a time from 2 cannonballs and 10 Rubium splinters

Making Cannonballs

An Ammo mould can be used to smith cannonballs with metal bars at a furnace to make 4 cannonballs per bar, or alternatively a Double ammo mould can be used to make 8 cannonballs with two bars. Additionally, if the player has 87 Sailing, the Ancient furnace can be used on Grimstone island (fairy ring code: DLP) to forge cannonballs at twice the rate of 5 ticks per action instead of 10. This can be further improved by recruiting Isles who allows the player to un-note select metal bars right next to the Ancient furnace.

The following smithing rates are rough estimates and will vary depending on how attentive vs AFK the player is. For the non-ancient furnace it's assumed the player is using the Edgeville furnace.

Cannon Ball smithing rates
Strategy bars/h balls/h
Furnace + Single mould 600 2400
Furnace + Double mould 1100 4400
Ancient furnace with Isles + Double mould 2100 8400

For Ironman Mode players looking to acquire cannon balls for sailing, it's generally recommended to buy either Bronze, Iron, or Mithril cannonballs from Port Roberts Cannonball Stall instead of smithing them as manually making cannonballs is comparatively a much less efficient process than acquiring the gold to buy them directly.
