A squid beak is an item that is used to create wooden blowpipes, obtained while cutting raw swordtip and jumbo squids at a rate of 1/1,024 and 1/512 respectively[1] per cutting action.
If the player is cutting squids on the chum spreader and rolls to receive a squid beak, they will receive squid beaks equal to the number of squids cut on that tick (up to 4 beaks). Cutting squids with a full inventory does not reduce a player's chances, and any offcuts will drop to the ground to make room for the beak if obtained on the first cut of the inventory.
Spirit flakes and rada's blessing can be used for a chance to double catch squid.
Acquisition via chum stations
Preparation using chum stations, which is faster than doing so by hand:
- Chum station - processes 2 fish per tick
- Advanced chum station - processes 3 fish per tick
- Chum spreader - processes 4 fish per tick
Note that the roll is per cutting action, so using a chum station is fewer rolls but higher yield. If players only need 1 beak, it is best to cut using a knife instead of the chum spreader, as players will get more rolls for less fishing (1 per squid). After a player starts cutting, a new squid of the same type is cut every 3 ticks automatically. This cannot be sped up by repeatedly using the knife on a fish.
Acquisition via chum stations is better for creating multiple wooden blowpipes: the player may desire to store an extra rosewood blowpipe in the master STASH unit on Brittle Isle.
- Players looking for one additional squid beak can speed up preparation by using a basic chum station on a boat nearby any lantern fishing spot. This reduces time between fishing a full inventory from ~50 seconds with a knife down to ~25 seconds (accounting for run distance and boarding). The teleport to boat spell may reduce this time further.
- Players looking to consume by-products can bank squid then utilise the faster preparation on a chum station from the bank boat. An open fish barrel allows fewer bank trips when gathering squid. When processing, the player does not need to move nor repeatedly get on and off their boat, and they can utilise a full inventory by withdrawing one type of squid at a time. It may be desired to not process swordtip squid here, instead saving them for squid paste to make haemostatic poultice and haemostatic dressings.
- Fish offcuts and fine fish offcuts are used as bait in crab trapping which provides resources for creating anti-odour salt, super hunter potions, and armadyl brews. This is one of the best sources to stockpile fine fish offcuts outside deep sea trawling.
