Ironman Guide/Crafting

Crafting is a skill that Ironmen typically train through glassblowing, due to its low cost and availability. Many pieces of important jewellery require Crafting, such as teleportation jewellery and amulets of glory.

Early training and Quests: 1-35

Do various quests that give Crafting experience for the early levels. Completing all of these quests will net a total of 23,856 Crafting experience, enough for at least level 35 Crafting.

Early alternative training methods and token experience include:

Glassblowing: 35-99

One of the most common and reliable ways of training Crafting is to blow molten glass. There are multiple ways to acquire the resources needed to do so based on your account's progression.

35-61: Buying buckets of sand and soda ash

Early on, the easiest way to acquire buckets of sand and soda ash is to buy the supplies from trader crewmembers. Smelt the soda ash and buckets of sand together in a furnace to create molten glass. Blow this glass into the highest tier item you can until 61 Crafting. After level 46, glass can be blown into unpowered orbs and later charged and crafted into battlestaves for more experience and profit.

61-99 Superglass Make

Farming giant seaweed and mining sand

After 61 Crafting, 77 Magic, and completion of Lunar Diplomacy, it is much faster to use Superglass Make to process bulk quantities of sand and giant seaweed you acquire from the quarry and Underwater farming, respectively.

Compared to buying soda ash and regular seaweed, the benefits include:

  • Seaweed spores spawn frequently on the ground near the seaweed patches, requiring very little investment into getting them.
  • With ultra compost, around 50 giant seaweed per run can be collected. Contrary to popular belief, magic secateurs do not affect the yield.[1] Seaweed plants also benefit substantially from Attas plants, although they require 76 Farming.
  • Superglass make can be cast directly on the giant seaweed, cooking it into soda ash is not required.
  • Superglass make gives roughly 60% bonus molten glass with giant seaweed, and processes the entire inventory in one cast.
The quarry, home of Sandstone

The fastest way of getting buckets of sand is to mine sandstone in the Quarry and grind it using Sandstorm just west of the mine. Noted empty buckets can be given to Drew at the grinder. Players can then claim noted buckets of sand from Drew after grinding sandstone, with each piece of sandstone ground providing a different amount of sand depending on the size of the piece. Drew charges 50 coins per bucket.

Players may also collect buckets of sand by casting teleport home to Yanille and filling buckets at the sand pit north of the Home Portal. Alternatively, upon completion of the quest Song of the Elves, players gain access to a sand pit in Prifddinas which is a few steps away from the north bank. These methods require less effort than mining sandstone, but are significantly slower.

Completing The Hand in the Sand quest allows the player to claim 84 free buckets of sand daily from Bert.

Players can farm giant seaweed by planting seaweed spores in seaweed patches in the underwater area of Fossil Island. Harvesting these seaweed patches grant a large amount of giant seaweed, one of which is equivalent to six normal seaweeds. For more info, see:Ironman Guide/Farming#Giant seaweed.

Once supplies have been collected, players can withdraw 18 buckets of sand and three giant seaweeds before casting Superglass Make to create molten glass. Blow the molten glass into the highest-tier glass item available for Crafting experience. Alternatively, blow glass into unpowered orbs for additional Crafting experience and GP from battlestaves or empty light orbs for additional Crafting and Firemaking xp at Dorgesh-Kaan.

Trader Stan's Trading Post

Charter ship method

The charter ship method still offers high Crafting experience per hour and does not require any banked supplies. The downside is that there usually is some competition for stock.

Buy buckets of sand and seaweed (or soda ash) from any Trader Crewmember, cast Superglass Make and make the highest-tier glass item available on the spot. Sell the glass items or drop them, hop worlds and repeat. This method will grant approximately 65,000–70,000 experience per hour with lantern lenses and 85,000–90,000 experience per hour with empty light orbs, depending on stock.

For best results, use this method in ports that are less popular. Areas like Port Tyras (requires Regicide), Brimhaven dock, and Mos Le'Harmless have a better chance of being stocked. Popular ports such as Port Khazard or Catherby are more frequently sold out, resulting in far less experience per hour.

Level 87-99 Fixing goblin lamps in Dorgesh-Kaan

Map of lamps in Dorgesh-Kaan

Fixing lamps in Dorgesh-Kaan is the way to get the most experience out of each molten glass. It requires 87 Crafting, 44 Thieving, 52 Firemaking, and completion of The Lost Tribe.

Molten glass is used to craft light orbs, which then repair lamps in Dorgesh-Kaan that give on average 724 Crafting experience, 550 Firemaking experience, and small amounts of Thieving experience.

Players should take a glassblowing pipe along with an inventory of molten glass out of the nearby bank and run to the wire machine. On the way, glassblow empty light orbs. Once there, thieve cave goblin wire from the wire machine and attach it to the empty light orbs. Upon crafting the completed light orbs, work your way around the city fixing the lamps.

Fixing the lamps

Around ten lamps will be broken at any one time, and are unique to each player; each player will see different lamps around Dorgesh-Kaan as broken. Upon fixing a lamp, should the player still be carrying additional light orbs afterwards, they will be notified whether there is another lamp in need of fixing nearby. This will be accompanied by a flashing arrow on their minimap if so. The player should bring low-weight equipment such as the Graceful outfit. They may wish to bring stamina potions and the ring of endurance to help with energy management.

Tip: Dorgesh-kaan sphere can be used to teleport randomly around Dorgesh-Kaan if a player is not near any broken lamps. These can be thieved from the chests, noted below, or bought from Oldak for 2 law runes and 1 molten glass.

Experience rates

Creating an empty light orb gives the player 70 experience. Adding goblin wire to complete the light orb grants another 104 experience.

For fixing a lamp, the player receives 500 Firemaking and 500 Crafting experience.

Every fifty lamps the player fixes, an additional 2,500 experience will be granted to both Crafting and Firemaking.

Skilled players can reach 130,000 Crafting experience, 90,000 Firemaking experience, and 4000 Thieving experience per hour.

While still learning, players should expect as low as 90,000 Crafting and 65,000 Firemaking and 3000 Thieving experience per hour.

If while fixing the lamps, the player also thieves the nearby chests at 78+ Thieving, a skilled player can expect more than 95,000 Crafting experience per hour, 70,000 Firemaking experience per hour, and 75,000 Thieving experience per hour. It takes some practice to get a good rhythm and balance between the three but if a good route is used the player can expect decent experience in all three skills.

Extra note: Chests in Dorgesh-Kaan

Players with 78 Thieving can thieve from the average chest and rich chest, which are both found in high numbers near lamps. These can grant additional light orbs, however the odds of receiving them are relatively low. The chests grant 200 Thieving experience and 650 Thieving experience per successful attempt, respectively. This will mean the player gains less Crafting experience, but more Thieving experience.

Both chests can provide extra cave goblin wire, and the rich chests provide empty light orbs and light orbs. This means that the player can restock some supplies as they go.

The player should bring lockpicks if Thieving the chests.

Other methods

Crafting battlestaves

Charging orbs and crafting battlestaves offers relatively decent Crafting experience and very good profit.

Players who have completed task sets of the Varrock Diary can buy noted battlestaves daily from a barrel near Zaff for 7,000 coins each. They all have to be bought at once, so a sizeable stack of coins is necessary. Starting at 15 with the easy tasks, each task set doubles the number of battlestaves that can be purchased per day. Players can also purchase a limited number of battlestaves from Zaff and various other vendors across Gielinor.

Players can also get battlestaves from various bosses and monsters, such as Zulrah, Vorkath, The Gauntlet, Alchemical Hydra and Skeletal Wyverns. Water orbs can be obtained as a common drop from Moons of Peril. Each bought and crafted battlestaff is worth 2,300 profit when high alched.

Alternatively, players can buy battlestaves in bulk quantities (via world hopping) from magic shops such as Baba Yaga's Magic Shop at Lunar Isle (requiring completion of Lunar Diplomacy) or at the Magic Guild Store (requiring The Hand in the Sand and 66 Magic to access).

Orb Items needed Procedure
Air orb Crafting 66 / Earth orb Crafting 58 (Warning: Wilderness) Grab 81 cosmic runes and 27 unpowered orbs, run to the Air or Earth Obelisk, charge the orbs and teleport to Edgeville with an amulet of glory. If Edgeville respawn is unlocked, use rings of returning in a PvP World instead. You can also go through the Ferox Enclave Dungeon followed by using the Soul Wars Portal to get to Edgeville using the ring of dueling's Ferox Enclave teleport.
Fire orb Crafting 62 / Water orbCrafting 54 There are a few possible methods to get there:

It is possible to charge the orbs faster by manually casting Charge Orb on the obelisk, one by one.

TzHaar-Hur-Rin's Ore and Gem Store in Mor Ul Rek

Cutting Gems

There are a multitude of ways to acquire gems from skilling, shops, or passively through PVM. Cutting gems gives relatively fast XP when processed.

Buying Gems in Mor Ul Rek

This method becomes viable once the player has obtained a fire cape and accrued approximately 3,200,000. Players can acquire Tokkul by selling chaos runes to TzHaar-Mej-Roh's Rune Store, then use the Tokkul to purchase gems from TzHaar-Hur-Rin's Ore and Gem Store.

  • If using chaos runes and Karamja gloves to earn Tokkul it is a 4:1 ratio for chaos runes to sapphires. This method can reliably earn around 40,000–50,000 Crafting experience per hour.

Gem rocks

Mining gem rocks, especially after completion of medium Karamja diary, gives competitive Mining XP rates while also banking a large quantity of gems to cut and turn into jewellery. It is also the most notable source of uncut opal, jade, and red topaz. Wearing a charged amulet of glory will increase mining speed significantly.

Shooting Stars

Stardust is obtained by mining the Crashed star. Stardust is used as currency at Dusuri's Star Shop that can be used to purchase the Bag full of gems for 300 Stardust. This is a non intensive/afk training method that provides decent Mining experience alongside collecting gems.

Experience rates vary greatly based on level, the tier of pickaxe used, and time spent locating stars. If mining consistently, players can expect between 22,000 and 32,000 experience per hour, and 600–1000 stardust per hour. This equates to be around 80–120 gems per hour.

Rusty Chest

The Rusty Chest on Dognose Island has a common chance of dropping gems, allowing for a free method to train both Crafting, and Thieving. The method requires 33 Thieving to open the chest, and 40 Sailing to reach the island. Should one wish to save the gems, bringing a gem bag will allow you to transport more gems per trip.

Port Roberts

Stalls in Port Roberts allow the player to obtain both uncut gems and silver ore/bars which can both be used for Crafting experience. This requires 75 Thieving, and 50 Sailing to access Port Roberts for the first time.

Corrupted Gauntlet

Uncut gems are frequently rewarded from the Corrupted Gauntlet, players will likely accrue a significant number of gems while hunting for their crystal equipment drops. The Gauntlet is located in Prifddinas which requires completion of Song of the Elves to access.

Jewellery

Making jewellery not only gives good Crafting experience, but it also provides valuable items to alch for profit or sell to stores such as Grum's Gold Exchange or Davon's Amulet Store. They also provide useful teleport locations and item effects when enchanted. To make jewellery you must first obtain either gold bars or silver bars. It is recommended to also use gems in jewellery for more coins and Crafting experience. Gold bars can be used to make sapphire, emerald, ruby, diamond, dragonstone, onyx, and zenyte jewellery. Generally, bracelets provide the best alch profit while amulets provide 5 experience more as well as 4 experience for stringing them at the cost of less alch profit.

Gold bars can also be used alone to make jewellery. It is recommended to either craft them into gold bracelets for alching or gold tiaras for better experience. Players can use around 1,400 to 1,700 gold bars per hour from running to and from the Edgeville furnace or the closer Prifddinas furnace, resulting in 35,000 to 42,500 experience per hour if crafting bracelets or 49,000 to 59,500 experience per hour if crafting tiaras.

Silver bars can be used to make opal, jade, and red topaz jewellery. Getting lots of these gems nearly exclusively comes from mining gem rocks. See the money making guide mining gemstones for how to do this efficiently. When using silver bars alone, it is recommended to make either tiaras for future Runecrafting experience or silver bolts (unf) for future Fletching experience.

Obtaining Gold and Silver

Dragonhide equipment

A sizeable amount of dragonhides are obtained from killing green dragons for Prayer experience and from killing Vorkath. Tan the hides in the Crafting Guild or by casting Tan Leather, craft the leathers into dragonhide bodies and high alch them for money.

Drift Nets

Jute fibre can be farmed in hops patches and woven into drift nets for 55 Crafting experience for every two jute fibres. This is a comparable amount of experience per item crafted to glassblowing. The drift nets can then be used to train Hunter and Fishing in drift net fishing, in the same area as the Giant seaweed patches. The amount of Crafting experience banked per jute run varies depending on Farming level, whether you have the magic secateurs, whether an attas seed is planted, what kind of compost (or protection) is used, and luck, but at higher farming levels, somewhere between 1000 and 2000 Crafting experience worth of jute fibre per run is likely. A good place to weave drift nets is at the Fossil Island camp, where, once built, a bank chest and a loom are very close together (and planks can also be collected from the spawns while running between the two tents, if desired, for later construction training). This is a simpler, slower, cheaper, and more passive way to accumulate Crafting experience over a long time as compared with glassblowing, and can be easily combined with giant seaweed farming or other methods of training Crafting for more efficient training.

Golem Crafting

Golem crafting is a Crafting training method located on the island of Wyrmscraig that serves as an alternative to glassblowing at higher levels. Within the activity, players help the people of Auchrie use sunstone by crafting, powering, and clothing protective golems. Golem crafting requires completion of Fallen From Grace, and thus level 60 Crafting. Experience rates can be upwards of 140,000 xp/hr.
