An onyx is the second rarest gem in Old School RuneScape, behind zenyte (which is created from an onyx and a zenyte shard). Cutting an uncut onyx with a chisel requires level 67 Crafting and yields 167.5 experience. It can then be made into onyx jewellery by using a furnace along with a gold bar and a mould. Onyx can also be cut into 24 onyx bolt tips, though this is not recommended due to the bolt tips being worth significantly less than the onyx.

In order to create an uncut zenyte, a cut onyx must be fused with a zenyte shard in the wall of flames of the Temple of Marimbo Dungeon while holding a zombie monkey greegree (either variant). Doing so grants 15 crafting experience and gives the message: You reach into the extremely hot flames and fuse the zenyte and onyx together, forming an uncut zenyte.

Using a zenyte shard on a cut onyx gives the message: Only the intense heat of the flame pits beneath Ape Atoll can fuse the zenyte and onyx together.

Six of these are used to build a volcanic theme at level 85 Construction in a player's superior garden. In addition, one is used to build an obsidian decorative bench at level 98 Construction.

Training

While onyxes can be used for training, it is strongly not recommended due to the likelihood of losing coins doing so, and the difficulty of sourcing them in large volumes. Any profit shown below should be treated with extreme caution as it is likely due to the low trade volume of onyxes and unenchanted onyx jewellery.

Crafting

Onyx can be crafted into jewellery at a furnace by using a gold bar and the appropriate crafting mould.

Onyx jewellery can be enchanted using Lvl-6 Enchant, requiring level 87 Magic. The spell requires 1 cosmic rune, 20 fire runes, 20 earth runes, and the piece of onyx jewellery that is to be enchanted.
