Sea charting/Weather

A player uses a portable weather station to chart weather patterns.

Weather is a type of sea charting task requiring at least level 57 Sailing^[boostable] that involves assisting Meaty Aura Logist in various locations by measuring weather patterns using the portable weather station. Despite being a sea charting activity, some weather data must be gathered on land. Once speaking with Meaty Aura Logist, she will give you a portable weather station specific to that particular location. Then you must use it to get a reading at the location where there is no wind, before returning to Meaty Aura Logist to turn in the Data filled portable weather station and complete the task.

Boosts may be used to hit the 57 Sailing requirement. Boosting is only required when starting and when getting a reading, handing in the data filled station to Meaty does not require a boost.

Finding the weather

The correct locations from which Meaty Aura Logist wants weather data measurements are always at the centre of a circular wind pattern, where the wind has stopped.

Going right for the centre

First, establish if the wind is clockwise or anticlockwise by sailing in the same direction as your portable weather station's readings until the wind changes. The centre of the circle will be approximately a 70-110 degree turn from the direction the wind is travelling, so turn about 90 degrees right if wind is clockwise, or about 90 degrees left if wind is anticlockwise. As you get close enough to the centre of the circle (or overshoot it), the wind direction you measure will at some point change (or stop). Re-adjust your heading to be a 90 degree turn away from the wind direction and continue until you find the centre.

If you are in the right spot and cannot log the weather data, try to reverse the boat into the spot instead (especially when using a Sloop) or try using a Raft instead.

Mapping the wind circle

An alternate method is to measure the wind direction in various locations and write it down as arrows on top of a map of the area. From there, you can estimate where the centre will be and take additional readings to further refine your estimate if needed. Keep in mind that depending on how accurately and precisely you draw the wind arrows on your map, it may not match up with the exact location where you took the wind reading.
