A casket could previously be received after completing any step of a Treasure Trail. These caskets did not always contain a reward, and sometimes only gave another clue scroll.
On 28 July 2016 Treasure Trails were updated. Caskets were replaced with new items called Reward caskets. They are only received once all steps have been completed, and are guaranteed to contain a reward.
Although caskets are no longer obtainable, they are still ingame for any player who had one before the update, making them a rare example of a discontinued item in Old School RuneScape.
