The pharaoh's sceptre is a discontinued item that previously had similar functionality to its modern incarnation. It was changed with the update that introduced Beneath Cursed Sands. In that update, the sceptre was updated to hold a vastly increased number of charges, and now functions in a manner similar to Xeric's talisman. It held 3 charges by default, increased to 4 charges after the Easy Desert Diary, 5 after the Medium Desert Diary, 6 after the Hard Desert Diary, and 8 after the Elite Desert Diary.

After the game update on 27 April 2022, some existing pharaoh's sceptres were automatically converted to the new item. However, players who had this item in storage at the time of the update kept the original item, albeit with updated menu options; the only menu option besides "Drop" is "Convert", which converts it into a normal pharaoh's sceptre. There is no longer any other use for the item.

27 April 2022 (Update \| poll)	The original pharaoh's sceptre is now discontinued: The item interface options have been replaced with a "Convert" option, which replaces it with a reworked version of the sceptre. As such, they are no longer equipable. The item names were changed to all be "Pharaoh's sceptre". The item values changed from 83,334 to 100. The items were made unnotable and unable to leave placeholders.
16 March 2022 (Update \| poll)	Pharaoh's sceptre is now 1-handed.
24 March 2021 (Update)	Pharaoh's sceptre now has scaling drop rates depending on the room its chest/sarcophagus is located.
23 September 2020 (Update)	The "Jalsavrah" and "Wield" options were switched, so Wield is now first. "Jalsavrah" was made the first option when equipped.
31 August 2017 (Update)	Partially charged versions of the item could now be turned into bank placeholders.
22 June 2017 (Update)	When leaving Pyramid Plunder with a full inventory, rewarded pharaoh's sceptres will remain on the ground for longer than 30 seconds.
9 February 2017 (Update)	The uncharged version was made darker to distinguish it from charged versions.
11 February 2016 (Update)	The "Teleport" left-click option was replaced with a "Jalsavrah" left-click option, and "Jaleustrophos", and "Jaldraocht" right-click options.
20 August 2015 (Update)	Fixed typos in teleport messages given by the pharaoh's sceptre.
16 April 2015 (Update)	Murky Matt will only decant pharoah's sceptres with the amount of charges you have unlocked from the Desert Diary.
5 March 2015 (Update \| poll)	The pharaoh's sceptre now holds more charges for the completion of Desert Diaries: 4 total charges for the easy diary. 5 total charges for the medium diary. 6 total charges for the hard diary. 8 total charges for the elite diary.
26 June 2014 (Update \| poll)	The pharaoh's sceptre now has an alch value of 50,000 coins.
6 March 2014 (Update \| poll)	Charged versions were renamed from "Pharaoh's sceptre" to "Pharaoh's sceptre (n)".
25 April 2013 (Update)	The jewelled sceptre no longer teleports players into the Desert Treasure pyramid before they have completed enough of the quest to unlock it.
4 – 29 January 2007	The item was renamed from "Pharoah's sceptre" to "Pharaoh's sceptre".
