Deadman: Reborn was an updated variant of Old School RuneScape's Deadman Mode, released on 25 August 2021 that lasted until 16 September 2021. In this variant, players received accelerated experience rates, increased drop rates of rare items, and most of Gielinor was classified as PvP areas. Many other small differences exist between Deadman: Reborn and the standard game, which are detailed below.
Changes from previous Deadman Modes
All existing RuneScape rules apply to Deadman: Reborn, as well as the following additional rules, which can be reported by players.
- Muling, or having a secondary account intended to hold a player's valuables so the player doesn't lose them on death, is prohibited and a bannable offence.
- Boxing, or fighting an NPC in a single-way combat area to prevent fighting another player, is prohibited and a bannable offence.
Anyone found to be abusing game mechanics to gain an advantage in a way considered by Jagex staff to be unsporting will be removed from Deadman: Reborn immediately. Anyone caught cheating in any Jagex event may be suspended from all future Jagex events. Jagex staff will review cases and players.
Finale inventories
For the first round of 1v1s, all players will have full access to their banks. They can also change attuned sigils, as if they were in a safe zone during the main Deadman: Reborn event. Once the first round begins, banking will no longer be possible.
Winners of fights will have all health, stats, and special attack restored. Any food or potions in their inventory at the end of the fight will be deleted, and replaced with the following list of supplies (excess supplies dropping to the ground):
- 1x Saradomin brew (4 dose)
- 1x Super restore (4 dose)
- 1x Sanfew serum (4 dose)
- 1x Super combat (2 dose)
- 1x Ranging potion (2 dose)
- 1x Anti-venom potion (4 dose)
- 10x Shark
- 1x Anglerfish
- 4x Karambwan
Mechanics
Like other Deadman modes, Deadman: Reborn has unique mechanics.
Separate server
Deadman: Reborn operates on its own servers, accessible through any Old School RuneScape client. These worlds are clearly marked as separate and distinct from the standard game.
Progress on a Deadman: Reborn profile of a player's account does not affect the player's main profile. In other words, regardless of what levels, equipment, or completions a player has achieved on the main game, all players begin at level 3 in Deadman: Reborn.
The following worlds were classified as servers for Deadman: Reborn:
Starting out
Players begin from scratch on Tutorial Island. Upon completing Tutorial Island, players can choose a destination to be teleported to (as opposed to instantly being teleported to Lumbridge): Lumbridge, Varrock, Falador, the Gnome Stronghold, or Ardougne. Players can choose to skip Tutorial Island at any point by talking with the NPC Skippy, who will immediately teleport the player to the location of their choice.
Starter packs
Each day, a player can claim one starter pack from the combat tutors in Lumbridge. This limit resets upon losing their final life.
These starter packs are untradeable and cannot be used in PvP. Each pack includes the following:
- A staff that comes charged with the equivalent of 500 fire strikes
- A bow charged with the equivalent of 2,000 bronze arrows
- A scimitar wieldable from level 1 attack, but otherwise has the stats of a Mithril scimitar
- 1 normal combat potion
- 12 cooked tuna
Protection
Players are under protection from PvP for 15 minutes after leaving Tutorial Island. When a player advances to a new combat bracket, the player has 60 minutes of PvP protection.
When a player respawns after losing their last life, the player has 15 minutes of PvP protection.
A player can remove this protection at any time by speaking to the Doomsayer in Lumbridge.
Safe zones
Most of Gielinor in Deadman: Reborn is PvP enabled. Players cannot attack other players if they are standing within designated safe zones, but can still be attacked by players standing outside these zones (be careful around the edges!).
No PvP zones
These zones have the PvP flag disabled entirely:
- Barbarian Assault (inside the minigame only)
- Random event areas
- Tutorial Island
Guarded areas
If a player enters a guarded zone while skulled, the player will be attacked by level 1337 guards, who will attack with ranged every game cycle, with its damage starting at 1/5th of the player's max hitpoints, increasing by 2 damage with each attack.
- Catherby (bank area only)
- East Ardougne (not including the unicorn cage and rooftop course)
- Falador (not including the rooftop course)
- Jatizso (town area only)
- Kourend Castle (not including the courtyard)
- Lumbridge
- Mogre Camp (entire underwater zone)
- Neitiznot (town area only)
- Port Phasmatys (not including the Ectofuntus)
- Prifddinas (Tower of Voices only)
- Rellekka (not including the piers, northern rock crab spawns, and rooftop course)
- Seers' Village downstairs bank
- Sophanem (not including the underground bank)
- Tree Gnome Stronghold (not including Brimstail's house)
- Varrock (not including for the rooftop course)
- Void Knights' Outpost (not including the combat island)
- Yanille (not including the town walls and the watchtower)
Combat rules changes
A 'PJ' timer of 16 game cycles will be running on all Deadman: Reborn worlds, affording a player a grace period where the player cannot be attacked by another player while fresh from an encounter. Anti-boxing measures will prevent players abusing this feature, and boxing will be against the rules in Deadman: Reborn.
A PJ timer will also be available to all NPC's that are currently located in Single-Way Combat areas. The result is that once in combat with another player, PvP will always take priority. If a player is in a fight with an NPC, they cannot be attacked by another player until they have defeated it. However, if the player is out of combat with an NPC and engages in combat with another player, it will not be possible for NPC's to attack either player for 9.6 seconds.
Certain areas of the world that are currently Multi-Way Combat will be changed to Single-Way Combat. This is to shift the scales in favour of solo players, who would otherwise struggle to complete content that was locked down by marauding clans. The areas changing from Multi-Way to Single-Way Combat are:
- Lunar Isle
- Bandit Camp
- Shadow Dungeon
- Barbarian Village
- White Wolf Mountain
Sigils
Sigils are useful power-ups similar to the relics of Trailblazer League. They provide XP boosts, speed increases, stamina boosts, and other benefits.
To use a sigil, a player must attune to it while in a safe zone. This causes it to become untradeable (although the player may still lose it on death). Players can unattune to a sigil while in a safe zone, causing it to become tradeable again.
Sigils come in three tiers. When a player starts Deadman: Reborn for the first time and again any time a player lose all three lives, they will be presented with a selection Tier 2 sigils. The selection is the same each time for all players, but this allows the player to attempt different strategies as Deadman progresses.
Sigils can be obtained as drops from NPCs and monsters as part of the Deadman-only drop table (see below), and can be traded via the Grand Exchange (they cannot be traded directly from player to player).
There will be 53 Sigils available within Deadman: Reborn.
Skulling
In Deadman: Reborn, attacking another player will give the attacker a PK skull for 5 minutes and be granted immunity from other players for 1 minute. This 1-minute grace period ends early if the attacker attacks another player, and resets the PK skull timer.
Death and lives
As usual, a player dies when their account is reduced to 0 hp. Unlike normal, each player starts their adventure with 3 lives.
Upon dying in PvM or other non-PvP combat, the player's life count is not affected. Players can reclaim their lost items from Death's Office as normal.
Upon dying in PvP combat, the player who died loses a life. The dead player loses all their worn and carried items (even if they have the Protect Item prayer activated), and drop a bank key (see Economy, below).
If a player loses their last life in PvP combat, there are additional consequences.
- The dead player's bank loss is more severe (see Economy, below).
- They respawn in their respawn location with a fresh supply of lives.
- They lose all sigils, but begin with a new Tier 2 sigil.
- They lose all combat XP (including Prayer).
- They lose 10% of non-combat XP.
- They lose all items within their bank, safe deposit box, and Death's Coffer. It is unclear whether players lose items in other death coffers, such as the Theatre of Blood reclaiming chest.
- They lose all points stored with the Emblem store.
- Their daily limit on starter packs from Lumbridge combat tutors is reset.
Untradeable items
If a player dies in PvP with an untradeable item equipped or carried, it functions as if a player had died below level 20 Wilderness to another player in the main game. It may break, be sent to Death's Office, be destroyed, or otherwise function as it normally would, depending on the item. The killer receives coins equal to its in-game value.
Teleporting and logging restrictions
Players cannot teleport or log out for 11 game cycles (6.6 seconds) after leaving combat with an NPC outside a safe zone, even if the player defeated it. This restriction does not apply to combat with NPCs within safe zones.
Players cannot teleport or log out for 12 game cycles (7.2 seconds) after leaving combat with another player.
Brackets
Depending on a player's Deadman: Reborn profile's combat level, the player can only access certain worlds.
There are separate bracket worlds for levels 3-35, 36-70, 71-100, and 101-126. Having too high or low of a combat level will prevent a player from joining a world, so a player will only be able to play on a world they have the correct combat level for.
The Grand Exchange functions across all brackets, but a player can only trade directly with other players in the same bracket as them.
If a player increases to another level bracket while on an earlier world (e.g. leveling from 35 combat to 36), the following conditions apply to the player until they switch worlds:
- The player is unable to attack NPCs or players, but the player of a higher level bracket can be attacked by others.
- They do not gain any XP from any sources.
- They can only use a bank 3 times before being unable to open the bank again.
Experience
Players receive a 10x experience rate for all non-combat skills in Deadman: Reborn. Players also receive increased XP rate for combat skills based on which combat bracket they are in.
- Level 3-35 = 10x combat XP
- Level 36-70 = 15x combat XP
- Level 71-100 = 20x combat XP
- Level 101-126 = 25x combat XP
These increases apply to normal skilling activities, as well as XP lamps, quest rewards, and similar sources.
Players do not receive combat XP from PvP, but fake XP drops will appear to indicate how much a player would have gained.
Automatic unlocks
Upon reaching new combat brackets, players automatically receive certain quests and other benefits as completed/unlocked. Players do not receive XP, items, or other rewards from quests that are automatically unlocked. Prerequisite quests for any quests on the following list are also automatically unlocked (such as the Cook's Assistant quest for Recipe for Disaster Part 1).
Upon starting a new account at level 3:
- Ernest the Chicken

- Recipe for Disaster (entire quest)[au 1]
Economy
Banking
While a player is alive, banking works as normal. Players also have a safe deposit box, which can store 10 individual items (not stacks of items; 10 coins counts as all 10 items).
When a player is killed by a monster, nothing happens to the player's bank.
When a player dies to another player and have lives remaining, the player loses the top 10 most valuable stacks of items from their bank. Dying players with lives remaining do not lose any items from their safe deposit box.
When a player dies to another player and do not have lives remaining, the player lose the top 28 most valuable stacks of items from their bank and safe deposit box.
Bank keys
When a player dies in PvP, they drop a bank key. The killer can pick up this bank key and, after their skulling has ended, claim the top 28 most valuable stacks of items.
Grand Exchange
Deadman: Reborn has a functioning Grand Exchange. Its buying, selling, and pricing function independently of the standard game's GE.
Shops
All range shops will sell the bone crossbow and bone bolts.
The following restock at faster rates:
- Magic rune shops
- Arrow shops
- Fletching supply stores
- Crafting supply stores
Lower tier equipment will restock even faster than higher tier equipment (e.g. air runes restock faster than death runes).
Emblem Store and emblems
Located just north of the Edgeville bank, the Emblem Trader operates the Emblem Store (formerly known as the bounty hunter shop). This shop takes Emblem Points as currency, which are obtained by giving archaic emblems to the Emblem Trader.
Players can trade in emblems to the trader by talking to him (not by opening up the store menu). Players do not need to bring emblems with them in their inventory; the trader can pull them directly from the player's bank.
Archaic emblems are obtained as infrequent drops from any NPC or monster.
In earlier versions of Old School RuneScape, players could also obtain emblems through the Bounty Hunter minigame. This minigame is disabled in both the standard game and Deadman: Reborn.
The Emblem Store has the following stock:
| Item | Cost (Emblem Points) | |
|---|---|---|
| Super attack | 1,000 | |
| Super strength | 1,000 | |
| Super defence | 1,000 | |
| Ranging potion | 6,000 | |
| Magic potion | 8,000 | |
| Super combat potion | 30,000 | |
| Prayer potion | 3,000 | |
| Super restore | 10,000 | |
| Saradomin brew | 25,000 | |
| Zamorak brew | 25,000 | |
| Stamina potion | 8,000 | |
| Extended antifire | 5,000 | |
| Antidote++ | 3,000 | |
| Anti-venom | 35,000 | |
| Blighted bind sack | 100 | |
| Blighted snare sack | 500 | |
| Blighted entangle sack | 1,000 | |
| Blighted teleport spell sack | 3,000 | |
| Blighted vengeance sack | 3,000 | |
| Blighted ancient ice sack | 2,000 | |
| Ring of wealth scroll | 50,000 | |
| Magic shortbow scroll | 100,000 | |
| Saradomin's tear | 1,500,000 | |
| Rune pouch | 1,200,000 | |
| Looting bag | 10,000 | |
| Clue box | 100,000 | |
| Ornate maul handle | 1,250,000 | |
Due to Edgeville being a PvP area, trading with the Emblem Trader may be unsafe with associated risks of being attacked by another player. Blighted items can be used anywhere in Gielinor during Deadman: Reborn, not just in the wilderness.
As Trouver parchments are unavailable in Deadman: Reborn, consequentially the rune pouch is always lost on death.

- Players receive 2x claws and hides from the giant mole.
- Players have a 1 in 3 chance of receiving a single 4-dose Saradomin brew when players kill Callisto, Venenatis, Vet'ion, or the Chaos Elemental. This would drop in addition to any standard loot.
- Players have a 1 in 5 chance of receiving a single 4-dose Saradomin brew when players kill Scorpia, the Crazy Archaeologist, or the Chaos Fanatic. This would drop in addition to any standard loot.
- When players would receive a barrows armour piece from looting the Barrows chest, there is a 50% chance they instead receive a stack of three 4-dose potions (Sardomin brew, super restore, ranging potion, or super combat potion).[dr 1]
- When players would receive a normal drop from the non-armour Barrows table, there is a small chance they instead receive a potion ingredient (crushed nest, red spiders' eggs, wine of zamorak, limpwurt roots, white berries, or grimy torstol). It is unclear whether these drops would be noted.*
Deadman-only drop table
In addition to any loot an NPC or monster would normally drop, there's a small chance it will also drop an item from the Deadman-only drop table. This table includes:
- Ancient Warrior's weapons (Ancient Warrior armour is not available in Deadman: Reborn)
- Mage's book
- Master wand
- Sigils (see above)
- Food
- Potions
- Herblore supplies
- Archaic emblems
NPCs with higher combat levels are more likely to give these drops. Wilderness NPCs have a higher chance of dropping Ancient Warrior weapons. Boss monsters have an especially increased chance of dropping on the table, beyond what their combat level would imply. Superior slayer creatures have a guaranteed chance of dropping on this table.
Unavailable gameplay
The following gameplay is not available to players in Deadman: Reborn. This means that some unique equipment, such as the [elite] void knight outfit, are also not available. Achievement diary tasks that require participating in an unavailable minigame are adjusted accordingly.
Unavailable minigames include:
- Castle Wars
- Emir's Arena
- Last Man Standing
- Pest Control
- Rat Pits
- Soul Wars
- Trouble Brewing
- TzHaar Fight Pit (not to be confused with the TzHaar Fight Cave)
- Minigame teleports
The following non-minigame content will also be unavailable:
- The nature rune chest in East Ardougne (it is unclear whether the Rellekka nature rune chest will be available)
- Count Check's ability to teleport players to the Stronghold of Security
- Fossil Island underwater area
- Players do not receive loot from thieving NPCs in protected areas, although players still receive XP
It is unclear whether the following content (unavailable on Permanent Deadman Mode) will be enabled in Deadman: Reborn.
- Bolt pouch
- The Protect Item prayer
- Scrying pools
- STASH units
- The Yanille POH portal
- Emir's Arena healers
- Ferox Enclave pools of refreshment
- Statue of Elidinis hit point bonus
- Naturally occurring (not player-grown) yew and magic trees within safe zones
It is unclear how functional the following content (partially enabled on Permanent Deadman Mode) will be in Deadman: Reborn.
- Instanced (and thus PvP-free) minigames, such as the Nightmare Zone, TzHaar Fight Cave, or Temple Trekking
- Noninstanced (and thus PvP-susceptible) minigames, such as the Tithe Farm and Mage Training Arena.
Miscellaneous changes
- Pyramid tops, found atop the Agility Pyramid, will turn to cash upon death.
- Dying with or dropping a stack of chinchompas will cause it to appear on the ground, visible to all players.
- Anti-door-spamming technical changes.
- Turael will not assign Kalphite slayer tasks.
- POH pools are unavailable for 3 minutes after combat.
- The Teleblock spell now lasts for 150 seconds instead of 5 minutes, or 75 seconds instead of 2.5 minutes if the defending player had Protect from Magic active when it was cast on them.
- A safe deposit box can be found in both banks at the Grand Tree.
Finale and prizes
Deadman: Reborn ran for roughly 3 weeks. At the end, the top 2,048 players were invited to participate in 1v1s, a series of paired PvP matches. The winner of each fight moved on to the next round.
If a player experienced connectivity issues and logged out before a fight began, they have only until the fight begins to log back in, or else faced disqualification.
The winner of the finale that ran on 18 September was Wolfff90. The event was targeted by direct network attacks, leading to heavy lag for players.[1] Despite Jagex stating that they "will not, at any point or under any circumstances, restart the Finale",[2] on 21 November it was announced that Jagex will proceed with a re-run of the finale after hosting betas of it to "verify [that they] have the correct savegames for when the Finals took place, so all participants have the exact same gear and levels" as before.[3] The re-run that ran on 24 June 2022 was also plagued by network issues. The winners of the re-run were announced on 30 June, being granted the following prizes:[4]
- 1st Place: Pid Grabber - $20,000
- 2nd Place: AL QUDDOOS - $10,000
- 3rd Place: DR3CARY - $1,000
- 4th Place: Koru - $1,000
- 5th-16th Place: Ionia, Umub, BallerNo2K, audwth, RRobert, tmnt4lyfe, FroggyFaker5, ICE GIANT88, pinkbowpetal, Riconeous, wakizashi59, Pee Shiesty - 12 months of membership
