The fish barrel is an item that can be obtained from the reward pool in the Ruins of Unkah after defeating Tempoross. The barrel is able to store a combined total of 28 raw fish of any type except for harpoonfish (from Tempoross), stackable fish, trophy fish, and fish caught in the Chambers of Xeric, Ruins of Camdozaal, or Neypotzli. Players can right-click to open the barrel, which will have raw fish that the player acquires be automatically placed inside the barrel, providing there is space for it. Players can check the contents of the barrel by selecting the "Check" right-click option, which tells the amount and type of raw fish the player has inside. Note that the "Destroy" right-click option will destroy the barrel itself, not the content inside.

When the barrel is full, players can only empty it at a bank or a bank deposit box, similar to looting bags; for Ultimate Ironmen, fish can be withdrawn by using the barrel on an appropriate bank stand. When this occurs, players will get a message in the chatbox stating: "The barrel is full. It may be emptied at a bank."

Upon death to an NPC, the barrel will drop to the ground with all of its contents still stored. It is also always kept on death if killed by another player in the Wilderness. This makes the fish barrel especially useful if fishing raw dark crabs from the Resource Area, as any fish stored in the barrel will be kept on death and denied to potential player killers, since the barrel is protected above dark crabs and dark fishing bait.

Players can combine the barrel with a fish sack to create the fish sack barrel, which is an equipable version of the fish barrel. There is no confirmation message when this occurs, but it can be split apart by selecting the "Dismantle" option after right-clicking "Configure".
