A 50 Defence build or moon pure is an account build characterised by its defence level of 50, allowing them to equip powerful Moons equipment while still being a low enough combat level to attack weaker builds such as one-defence pures and berserkers, even in lower level wilderness. These builds are primarily used in no-honour PKing, but are also a strong option for Bounty Hunter or PvP worlds, where they can use the Eclipse set along with melee and Vengeance.

Gearing and Risk Consideration

50 Attack Mage Weapons

At 50 Attack, your mage weapon will always be your best DPS, so it is recommended that you bring the best mage weapon that you can use. The location that you PK at along with the Spellbook being used will determine the weapon that you will bring.

You should pick your mage weapon based on the location that you enjoy PKing at the most. The deeper into the Wilderness you are, the more viable Ancient Magicks become, due to not needing to Tele Block players, meaning you should pick either the Purging staff or the Ice ancient sceptre/Ancient sceptre. If you prefer to PK in low level wilderness, the use of the Tele Block spell is vital, due to players being able to teleport away from fights, meaning you should pick either the Purging staff or the Mystic smoke staff.

50 Attack Mage Weapons
Weapon Name Price Notes
Purging staff 31,432,565 The Purging staff has the highest mage bonus of any mage weapon in the game at any attack level. However creating the purging staff requires level 74 Crafting[boostable], level 55 Smithing[not boostable], and having read Duradel's notes after completion of While Guthix Sleeps.

The Purging staff performs very well on both ancient and standard spell books, making it useful at all levels of wilderness, its high price makes it perfect on 50 attack builds as your best spec weapon the Granite maul (ornate handle) will always be lost on death protecting the staff.

Harmonised nightmare staff 451,162,831 The Harmonised Nightmare Staff is a very good but very expensive staff boasting an increased attack speed similar to that of Powered staves.

It is recommended to use the staff on the Standard Spellbook using Fire Surge along with a Tome of fire outputting immense amounts of damage, making it perfected for smiting other players plus ones.

Ice ancient sceptre Not Tradeable The Ice ancient sceptre boasts an increase in the the effects of Ancient Magicks by 10%, with an additional 10% accuracy bonus given to ice spells on targets that can be frozen and are not currently frozen.

It is recommended to use the sceptre in deep wild due it its boost to Ancient Magicks, meaning the user will not be able to Tele Block blocks, unless a Magic cape allowing the player to switch spellbooks.

Mystic smoke staff 1,821,169 The Mystic smoke staff is a cheaper and more accessible mage weapon compared to the others listed. It is the perfect starter mage weapon to use due to its low cost and ability to autocast Fire Surge along with other Standard spellbook attack spells.

It is recommended to use the Mystic smoke staff on the Standard spellbook, due to the staff being able to replace both fire and air runes in your inventory, although it can be used on Ancient Magicks other weapons are better.

Ancient staff 60,512 The Ancient staff is a cheaper and more accessible mage weapon compared to the others listed. It is the perfect starter mage weapon for deep wilderness due to its low cost and ability to autocast Ice barrage along with other Ancient Magicks attack spells.

It is recommended to use the Ancient staff on the Ancient Magicks spellbook, this is the standard version of the Ice ancient sceptre and is far easier to obtain but is missing the effect and accuracy buffs of its upgraded version, although it can be used on Standard Spellbook other weapons are better.

50 Attack Spec Weapons

At 50 attack you are limited in your options for spec weapons. It is recommended for most players to bring either a Granite maul (ornate handle) or a Dark bow due to their relatively low cost and high damage potential.

50 Attack Spec Weapons
Weapon Name Price Notes
Granite maul (ornate handle) 747,574 One of the best melee based spec weapons in the game, the granite mauls special attack will always hit instantly, allowing players to stack their opponents out with another attack such as a Fire surge.

If the mage weapon that you are using has a Special Attack bar a Granite Maul (or) should almost always be used, especially when fighting Defence Pures.

Dark bow 693,756 A range based spec weapon, although not as potent as the granite maul, the Dark bow is still a very useful spec weapon due to its ability to deal high amounts of range damage.

The Dark bow may also be used with the Dragon thrownaxe special attack, allowing players to quickly deal high amounts of range damage quickly, with minimal extra risk.

Volatile nightmare staff 68,504,351 A mage based spec weapon, due to its high price, it is not recommended that new PKers bring this with them. However when used in conjunction with high level Mage Gear and Fire Surge it is possible to stack out players for their entire health bar.

60 Attack Mage Weapons

Being 60 Attack does not grant access to any new mage weapons, therefore you should use the 50 attack mage weapons listed above.

60 Attack Spec Weapons

At 60 attack you unlock the ability to use dragon weapons.

Attack level recommendation

50 or 60 Attack are the most viable options for a moon pure. Going above 60 attack is not recommended for PvP, as the increased combat levels will put you in the level range of builds with access to Piety/Rigour/Augury.

Notable quests

When built properly, moon pures with 50+ Attack, 50 Defence, and 55+ Prayer are able to complete all quests that give experience in those skills, other than King's Ransom and Knight Waves. This allows them to unlock a large amount of content and be prepared for any future content that may require these quests.
