A defence pure is a type of free-to-play combat pure account that focuses on training Defence. Defence pures are very difficult to kill within their combat level brackets due to their extremely high defensive capabilities. This makes them very useful as scouts and tanks for their teams.

Free-to-play defence pures lack the members-only offensive options such as using poisoned weapons, ring of recoil, or the dragonfire shield special attack. However, they are still useful for clans in the deep Wilderness, as they often carry supplies and perform tasks such as world hopping or luring.

Skills

Primary

Defence pures train Defence Defence without restriction.

Secondary

Defence pures might choose to train Magic Magic up to 25 to gain access to the Varrock Teleport spell for an emergency teleport, and to slightly improve the magic defence. This also allows them to train Ranged Ranged up to 20 without affecting the combat level which unlocks the studded armour with a notable magic defence bonus.

Training equipment

Use a 3-tick weapon such as a goblin paint cannon, swift blade, or ham joint for Defence training. Note that the goblin paint cannon is a 2-handed weapon and does not allow the use of an offhand item such as as shield or mooleta.

When training on NPCs, wear the best available metal armour and an amulet of power to maximize the accuracy.

When training on a 1 Defence alt in the Castle Wars minigame, amulet of strength might be preferred as having a higher strength bonus requires less frequent castlewars brew dosage to deal 2 damage with a 3-tick weapon, but keep in mind that it lacks the accuracy bonuses. Armour is not required. The strength bonus of gold decorative boots does not seem to have an effect on damage output with 1 Strength level with either amulet, although they are still worth buying for their melee defence bonuses.

Player-versus-player combat equipment

In PvP areas, using a magic staff or any elemental staff is preferable to other weapons due their considerable defensive bonuses, especially when it comes to magic defence. Amulet of defence is also preferable to amulet of power due to its slightly higher defensive bonuses.

In order not to risk losing any expensive rune items, a single piece of rune armour is often replaced with an item that provides additional magic defence bonuses. For example, rune chainbody can be replaced with a hardleather body, rune full helm with a leather cowl, or rune kiteshield with an anti-dragon shield. Bringing an entire rune set is not advisable unless the account has access to the Protect Item prayer or is guaranteed not to be attacked in multicombat areas.

To protect from combat spells, the following items can be brought to raise the magic defence: magic staff and elemental staves (+10), amulet of defence (+7), amulet of power (+6), hardleather body (+6), zamorak monk bottom (+3), leather cowl (+2), anti-dragon shield (+2) and wooden shield (+1).

While Castle Wars boots provide the best melee defence bonuses, note that they will be lost beyond 20 level of the Wilderness on death. To avoid losing boots that take a significant time to obtain like white decorative boots or gold decorative boots, it is recommended to use leather boots, fighting boots, fancy boots, fancier boots, or red decorative boots in the deep Wilderness. The latter cost only 4 castle wars tickets and provide notable melee defensive bonuses equivalent to the steel boots. Below 20 level of the wilderness and in other areas the boots will not be lost, but keep in mind that gold decorative boots will still get damaged on death and require a repair fee.

If any prayers are used, god armours are preferable to regular rune items due to their prayer bonuses. Gilded equipment can also be used (without skulling) to perform luring.

Other items

Chronicle, cowbell amulet and skull sceptre can be used to teleport in free-to-play worlds without training Magic. However, keep in mind that chronicle cannot be used in the Wilderness, and skull sceptre is much more difficult to obtain–especially without access to the members worlds where poison or items such as ring of recoil can be used to deal extra damage.

Training

Training defence pures is rather slow due to their low damage output. During training, make sure to set the attack style to defensive.

PvM

Seagulls are among the most efficient NPCs to kill due to their negative defensive bonuses, 1 Defence level and relatively high Hitpoints. However, defence pures are commonly trained on monks due to their healing abilities: killing a monk with only 1 attack and strength is time-consuming, and their damage output is negligible, so a single NPC can be trained on for up to 20 minutes AFK before any interaction is required. Note that as of Project Rebalance: Combat Changes, 3-tick weapons are capable of killing monks, so a 4-tick weapon such as bare fists must be used for AFK training.

An amulet of power or amulet of strength, along with the Silverlight and frequent strength potion dosage can be used to hit a maximum of 3 on demon type enemies for a more active training method. Imps, such as those near the Karamja Volcano, are the recommended targets as their defence is low enough to hit somewhat reliably. Due to the necessity of using strength potions, it can be an expensive training method in addition to requiring more attention.

PvP

Defence pures can be trained on 1 Defence alts in Clan Wars free-for-all area. This might be more click-intensive than training on monks since the alternative accounts have to healed, but allows to achieve slightly higher experience rates.

Another alternative is training on 1 Defence alts in Castle Wars. This requires a little bit more setup and there is a downtime between the games, but thanks to the castlewars brew, the maximum damage with 1 Strength and amulet of power or amulet of strength is increased to 2, which is a significant boost to the damage output of the defence pures. This method is also worth consideration since 400 castle wars tickets are necessary to buy the best boots in the free-to-play worlds: gold decorative boots.

Other training methods

Defence level of 3 can be obtained on the tutorial island without gaining any Hitpoints experience. In order to do that, do not kill the first rat immediately and instead damage several rats until getting the 3 level.

X Marks the Spot quest can be finished to gain 300 experience in any skill including Defence or Hitpoints via an experience lamp. The Ides of Milk also offers a 1,000 combat experience lamp.

Lamps and books of knowledge from random events are among the only ways to obtain Defence experience without training Hitpoints in the free-to-play worlds.

Variants

Members training methods can be used to train Defence without gaining Hitpoints experience in order to lower the combat level.

Magic

Historically, some defence pures used as mules chose to train Magic to 25 in order to gain access to the Varrock Teleport spell for a quick escape method from the Wilderness and other dangerous areas. This also allowed them to train Ranged up to 20 level without gaining any additional combat levels, which grants access to studded armour with considerable magic defence bonuses. Having 25 Magic also allows to finish the Dragon Slayer I quest without increasing the combat level by its Strength experience reward, which allows to wear the rune platebody and speeds up Defence training. This increases the versatility of these pures at the cost of the extra combat levels.

Nowadays, cowbell amulet can be used instead after finishing The Ides of Milk quest. It allows teleporting up to the 20th level of the Wilderness, is charged with common air runes, and has no additional requirements. Alternatively, a skull sceptre can be obtained in the members worlds with items such as ring of recoil or poisoned weapons, as it also allows to teleport under 20 level of the Wilderness in the free-to-play worlds.

Prayer

Getting 25 Prayer level for the Protect Item prayer or 43 level for all protection prayers is worth consideration, especially if increasing the overall combat level is desired. Steel Skin available at 28 prayer level also provides a considerable Defence boost of 15%.

Keep in mind that even with 1 Prayer level, it is possible to prayer flick the Thick Skin prayer for a 5% Defence bonus, which is relatively easy due to its slow prayer drain rate.

Progression

Defence pures can be easily converted into tanks by training the offensive combat skills. This significantly raises their combat levels and allows wearing items such as rune platebody or green d'hide armour.

Changes

Date Changes
29 May 2024
(Update)

Minimum hit has been changed from 0 to 1. Now, if you pass an accuracy check for an attack, any damage rolls that would have previously resulted in 0 are boosted up to 1. As an example, if the max hit is 3, you can roll 1, 1, 2, or 3 for damage.
