A magic tank is a type of free-to-play combat pure account that focuses on training Defence and Magic.
While largely unsuccessful in typical arranged 1-vs-1 combat due to the low speed and damage output of magic, these accounts are valuable in multicombat areas where they can deal considerable damage to armoured opponents with their combat spells and support their clans. Thanks to their defensive capabilities and access to utility spells, magic tanks can perform tasks like scouting or hopping, and support their team with utility spells such as Snare or Tele Block.
Skills
Primary
Magic tanks train Magic without restriction.
Secondary
Magic tanks train Defence to at least 40 level to be able to wear the rune armour. While Defence can be trained further, it is usually restricted to stay in a specific combat level range.
While not typically trained by magic tanks, Attack has to be raised to at least 30 level in order to wield the Bryophyta's staff. Finishing the Dragon Slayer I quest necessary to wear the rune platebody and green d'hide body also grants 33 level in
Strength.
Additionally, these pures can train Ranged up to level 40 to be able to use the green d'hide armour.

Magic tanks can use a combination of wizard robes and zamorak monk robes to maximise the magic accuracy bonuses. This is especially useful when trying to land Snare or Tele Block after scouting a target.
The gear can be changed to the defensive variant by using rune armour pieces to minimize the incoming damage when attacked or focused by the opponents. Defensive gear is also useful when world hopping in a dangerous location.
When relying on prayers, god armours can be used instead of regular rune items due to their prayer bonus.
Different combinations of rune armour and wizard robes can be used, balancing the tradeoff between defensive bonuses and magic accuracy. In particular, rune med helm and rune sq shield can be considered because of their lower magic accuracy penalties. Keep in mind that rune platebody, rune chainbody and rune platelegs have significant magic accuracy penalties, and thus are not recommended. The same applies to the green d'hide armour to a slightly lesser extent.
Amulet of power can be used over amulet of magic for its defensive bonuses.
Shaman mask has the same magic accuracy bonus as the wizard hats with similar small bonuses and penalties to an iron full helm. It can be used over a wizard hat whenever melee and ranged defence bonuses are more important than magic defence, although it can be more costly.
The Bryophyta's staff can be used over elemental staves to maximise the magic accuracy bonus. However, it is rather expensive and should be used with caution within dangerous PvP activities, especially when skulling up without the Protect Item prayer.
When luring the opponents, trimmed armour or gilded equipment pieces, as well as the Bryophyta's staff can also be worn.
Training
To minimize the combat level, train Magic without gaining Hitpoints experience with methods such as splashing, casting curses, teleporting, enchanting jewellery and alchemy.
In order to gain access to rune platebody and green d'hide body, it is necessary to do the Dragon Slayer I quest which grants 18,650 experience in Strength and Defence. When aiming for a specific Defence level, make sure to do the quest early on.
Variants
Prayer
Getting at least 43 Prayer level is recommended for the protection prayers. This can be further trained up to 45 to access Mystic Might which is the best free-to-play Magic-boosting prayer. Keep in mind that even with its small magic damage boost it has no effect on the maximum magic hit of the blast spells. A higher Prayer level can be trained for convenience in the deep Wilderness.
Progression
Magic tanks can be thought of as a variation of free-to-play tanks with a clear focus on Magic and typically a lower Hitpoints level. By training other combat skills, magic tanks can be easily converted to classic tanks, although their high Magic levels often put them in considerably high combat level brackets.
Magic tanks with around 40 Defence level can be converted to rune pures, which are much more successful in the typical 1-vs-1 combat. When considering such account progression, make sure to do the Dragon Slayer I quest before getting 34 Defence level to avoid going over 40 Defence while still being able to wear the rune platebody and green d'hide body. In order to avoid getting any combat levels, Attack, Strength, and Ranged skills must be trained in the members worlds with methods that do not grant any Hitpoints experience.
Trivia
- This build used to be popular in RuneScape Classic since metal armours did not affect the accuracy of the combat spells.
