Defence pure

A Defence pure maintains a low Combat level while having a high Defence in order to equip endgame armour in low combat brackets. When player-killing, other players have a large window of opportunity to escape from a Defence pure due to their weak attacks. However, other players also find it difficult to kill Defence pures due to their ability to tank hits.
Additional sources of damage for Defence pures are poisoned daggers, such as the iron and bone daggers, and the Dragonfire shield. The poison deals six damage every 15 seconds, and the Dragonfire shield special attack deals from 15 to 25 damage and can be used every 192 game ticks, or about 1 minute and 56 seconds. [1] The shield’s accuracy is dependent upon the user's Defence level vs. the opponent’s Magic Defence bonus.
It is recommended to use a goblin paint cannon for early Defence levels as it is the fastest attacking melee weapon in the entire game. Use this coupled with the recommended amulet of fury or amulet of glory and spiked manacles for maximum attack bonus. Only use an amulet of strength if its use will result in at least 43 strength bonus, as that is when you can hit 2s unboosted at 1 Strength. For an early set, the maple blackjack will give a +20 Strength bonus with the only requirement being 30 Thieving. Using the setup of a maple blackjack along with an amulet of strength or amulet of fury, a regen bracelet, spiked manacles, and a berserker ring can be used to hit the 43 strength bonus threshold that will allow a max hit 2 unboosted from the very beginning of your training (this set-up will allow for the most exp/hr on a Defence pure without 60 Prayer until 65 Defence).
At level 65 Defence, for a hefty cost, Defence pures unlock their fastest training set-up (for the level). Equipping an Amulet of strength, Regen bracelet, Obsidian helmet, Bandos chestplate (or Fighter torso), Bandos tassets, Dragon boots, Toktz-ket-xil, and Berserker ring (i) will give the wearer a 43 strength bonus with armour alone; this will allow the player to equip the Ham joint or Swift blade (the expensive one handed equivalents to the Goblin paint cannon) and hit 2s with the fastest possible melee attack speed. Alternatively, a slightly inferior set-up upgrade can be acquired at level 65 without using Minigame rewards (no Berserker ring (i), Swift blade, or Fighter torso); swapping the Berserker ring (i) with a Tyrannical ring, keeping the Amulet of fury, and equipping the Dramen staff will allow the player to hit 2s with a higher crush bonus than the Maple blackjack.
With a 43 strength bonus from armour alone, the Swift blade is the optimal weapon for a Defence pure that does not yet have a Fire cape because it can make use of the stab bonus provided by the Ardougne cloak 1.
Alternatively, at 65 Defence, one can equip an red topaz machete, amulet of fury, obsidian helmet, Bandos chestplate (or Fighter torso), Bandos tassets, dragon boots, toktz-ket-xil, and berserker ring (i) to achieve a +51 Strength bonus with +34 slash bonus. Using divine super combat potions (or divine super attack potions + divine super strength potions) you will be able to hit 3's to achieve experience rates upwards of ~7k/hr at ammonite crabs. This should give the player the best experience rates up until 80 Defence.
At combat level 40 (around 85 Defence if not training any other combat skills), Pest Control is unlocked. Spending Pest Control points on Defence exp becomes the fastest exp/hr. Cutting logs and repairing barriers within the minigame will keep the player from becoming inactive. It is Recommended you wear the Kandarin headgear 1 within the minigame due to the effect it has that allows players to receive 2 logs for every tree cut.
Ironman Mode accounts can be used as well. Access to higher tier equipment, jewellery, and even weapon poison is limited. The main benefit is that these accounts do not gain experience from PvP combat.
Types of Defence Pures
Strength Level
Most Defence pures choose to remain at 1 Strength for the lowest possible combat level, but some choose to gain a few levels in Strength because the effect on their combat level is very small, while an increase in their max hit from 1 to 2 doubles the exp/hr they gain. For example, levelling Strength to 5 allows a player to hit 2 damage when wearing an Amulet of strength. This is not recommended unless the player is F2P because, as stated earlier, a player can hit for 2 damage at 1 Strength unboosted once they reach a Strength bonus of at least 43.
Using Super strength potions, players will attain a max hit of 3 at 2 Strength and 43 Strength bonus, or at 3 Strength and 36 Strength bonus. This increases dps by 50% compared with a max hit of 2 for faster training, while potentially having no impact on combat level. Divine strength potions make it trivial to stay at the maximum boosted level to keep the higher max hit.
Strength levels may also be used to unlock ability to use Warhammers, which are powerful albeit slow weapons that have no Attack requirement. 60 Strength unlocks the Dragon warhammer and the abilities of an Obsidian tank, at the cost of just under 20 additional Combat levels.
Attack Tank
Some Defence pures will choose to level up both defence and attack while keeping their strength at 1. This gives a Defence pure the ability to use melee weapons that would not be possible to wield on a regular Defence pure. This allows the tank to deal out consistent damage while training and fighting monsters and NPCs, increases the max hit of the tank considerably higher (depending on the weapon used), and allows use of the Verac's and Guthan's barrows set effects. An example of this build would be: 75 attack, 1 strength, and 75 defence.
Prayer Tank
While many Defence pures remain at 1 prayer, some players may choose to level up their prayer as well. Doing this would raise the combat level however making the account very difficult to kill at 43+ prayer. Building this type of Defence pure also allows for early access to Pest Control which is a very good way to level up Defence and Hitpoints on the account. This type of build also gives access to more quests and makes fighting NPCs and monsters considerably easier. Prayer equipment may also be used on this type of build including Spirit Shields, Blessed Spirit Shields, and Elysian Spirit Shields, if the player is able to afford one. The Elysian Spirit Shield also makes the Defence pure extra protected against attacks with its passive effect. Another thing to note with this build is that at 60 prayer the build can use croziers, which is the best in slot weapon for a 1 attack tank to use, this build can also make use of the Antler guard which can help increase accuracy with its bonuses to stab, slash and crush as well as make use of rings of recoil easier with its negative defensive bonuses.
10 Hitpoints
This type of Defence pure keeps their Hitpoints at 10 and has high Defence. While this kind of Defence pure takes a long time to make, it keeps the combat level of the account very low. The main method used to gain Defence XP on a 10 HP Defence pure is using Antique lamps found from Specimen Cleaning at the Varrock Museum. This method is about 1.7-1.9k xp hr. Defence XP is also gained through the Dragonfire shield special attack once 75 Defence is attained.
Gadderhammer
The Gadderhammer Defence Pure deals the most damage. It can be used in more training areas than the usual monks and seagulls. The pure is four combat levels above a standard Defence Pure because the quests required raise your Attack and Strength levels to 6 and your Prayer level to 11.
The Dwarven helmet from the quest Grim Tales gives a +6 bonus to crush. The quest requires you to have 45 Farming,
52 Herblore,
58 Thieving (boostable),
59 Agility,
71 Woodcutting (boostable), and you must have completed Witch's House. It should be noted that this quest is extremely hard to complete on a Defence pure as Glod is immune to poison.
You can also use a Fighter hat, which has a +5 bonus in all attack styles. This can be obtained from the Barbarian Assault minigame.
Top Strength bonus items for each slot
+12 Amulet of rancour (with 90 Hitpoints) or +10
Amulet of strength/
Amulet of torture (with 75 Hitpoints)
+20 Maple blackjack(d) or +32
Guthix crozier (with 60 Prayer)
+4 Dragon boots or
Spiked manacles or
Aranea boots
+4 Fire cape
With a super combat potion and a strength bonus greater than +51, players will reach the minimum threshold for a max hit of 3 damage. Full best-in-slot gear with a Ham joint or
Swift blade gives +60 strength, allowing for some flexibility in gearing choices.
Note: Oathplate armour allows players to reach the +51 strength threshold. However, the
Swift blade defensive attack style utilises stab rather than slash, preventing the player from using the increased accuracy bonus without falling back on a slower weapon.
Training locations
- Monks are the most AFKable thing to train on (up to 20 minutes without clicking), with the caveat that if your DPS is higher than the monk heals, the monk will die. Players can expect to receive 1400-3000 Defence XP/hour depending on gear setup.
- Sand Crabs and Ammonite Crabs generally provide better afk training than monks due to lower defence, crabs being aggressive, and being able to stand where multiple spawn. Sand crabs are easily accessible using the Woodcutting Guild teleport on the Skills necklace. Depending on your gear setup and potions, defence exp rates can exceed 7-12k/hr.
- Seagulls and Imps offer great exp rates pre-40 combat, giving rates up to 7k defence xp/hr when using potions frequently, but are far more click-intensive than the afk methods.
- (4) Imps can be farmed in Citlalli's basement on Kastori, as they are locked to a small room and do not teleport or roam.
- Cave bugs are very afkable but give inferior exp rates because their defensive stats are a bit higher.
- Pest Control or Soul Wars at 40 Combat offers the best combat experience rates for a defence pure, use of a dolo boosting method for Soul Wars is recommended.
- Scurrius can be an extremely effective training method with access to protection prayers. The giant rats it frequently summons are always killed in one hit by any weapon and grant 60 Defence and 20 Hitpoints experience each. Dealing damage to Scurrius itself will also grant kill credit and a 1/33 chance of receiving Scurrius' spine, which can be traded in for an antique lamp worth 5,000 Defence experience. As most of the experience comes from killing the giant rats, which Scurrius will not summon when at high health, it is ideal to fight it with a group of players who do not kill the giant rats.
- The Gemstone Crab offers a more afk method of training. With 0 defensive stats, players can expect to receive lower/similar experience rates to sand crabs with the added bonus of needing to click less frequently. (only worth it for the 10 min afk lower exp due to exp debuff)
- Killing Brutus after completion of The Ides of Milk and utilising the +100% XP multiplier grants 10k-15k XP an hour using best in slot armour and using divine super combat potion, regen bracelet, amulet of fury, berserker ring (i), maple blackjack(d) (if it gets you to +51 str) or red topaz machete and Dragonfire shield spec yielding up to 17k xp an hour, becoming the fastest training method to date that is not locked behind 40cb. (40 Defence is recommended or 75 for DFS)
