Underwater Agility and Thieving involves swimming to loot open chests and clams for Mermaid's tears and Glistening tears. Each can be looted repeatedly whilst open, with a success rate based on your Thieving level ranging from 12.11% - 16.02%.

Both types of tear are received in equal number, and both can be exchanged with Mairin for rewards. 400 Mermaid's tears can be used to purchase the Merfolk trident, whilst Glistening tears can be exchanged for a scaled amount of Experience in Thieving, Agility, or a combination of both based on the squared values of their respective levels. The shown experience rate of 422.8 per tear assumes that only Thieving experience is taken, and at the recommended minimum Thieving level of 65. That scales up to 974.8 per tear at 99 Thieving.

Maximizing your tears per hour is mostly dependent on how efficiently you can navigate the Underwater area, though luck and your Thieving level do also factor in. A higher Agility level allows you to 'run' continuously for longer periods and regenerate Energy faster whilst looting. Those with a lower Agility level may wish to carry a few Super energy or Stamina potions to avoid running out of Energy. Whilst navigating the area, you're also required to maintain your Oxygen level without a Fishbowl helmet, adding an additional layer of complexity. Expected rates range from around 170 to 230 pairs of tears per hour.
