The profitability of this method varies by fishing level. The chart above is based on fishing level 30. For other levels, please consult the profitability chart below.
Currently raw sardines are worth 25 and raw herring are worth 73 at the grand exchange. This guide assumes you bank and sell both types. If there is an extremely large discrepancy in these prices, you may find it more profitable to simply drop the cheaper one rather than banking them.
Just south-west of the Draynor Village bank, there are some spots to bait fish. If you need to get a fishing rod or replenish your supply of fishing bait, you can visit the fishing shop in Port Sarim. If you are below 15 , you may get attacked by the aggressive dark wizards that patrol the area.
The profit listed in the table above is based on fishing level 30 . As your fishing level increases, you catch fish faster and a higher proportion of the fish caught are the more profitable herring. Starting at level
57 , you will catch more herring than sardines. Because the quality of your catch improves as level increases, the profit is not simply proportional to the catch speed your fishing level provides. The following chart demonstrates how profitability scales with fishing level.
Note that you can bait fish with just level 5 , but you cannot catch herring until level
10 , which severely limits profitability.
| % Herring | Trips | Total Fish | Fish Caught | Profit/Fish | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

This table assumes fishing until an inventory of 26 fish is filled and it takes ~15 seconds per banking cycle of travel.
Cooking
The raw sardines and raw herring can be cooked; however, this cuts deeply into your profits and is not recommended if your aim is simply to accumulate coins. Grand exchange prices between the cooked and uncooked versions are often unfavourable. Also, there is a chance to burn the fish and make it worthless if your cooking level is not sufficiently high.
| Fish | Minimum |
Uncooked Price | Cooked Price | Profit/Loss | GP/EXP | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 38 | 40 | 25 | 13 | −12 | −0.30 | |
| 5 | 41 | 50 | 73 | 25 | −48 | −0.96 |
