The black warlock is a butterfly that players can capture with the Hunter skill at level 45, by using a butterfly net and a butterfly jar. Players with level 55 Hunter can catch black warlocks barehanded. Black warlocks may be assigned as a hunters' rumour task by Huntmaster Gilman or Guild Hunter Cervus. You do not need a butterfly jar when catching them to receive the Black butterfly wing.

Releasing a black warlock (or catching it without a jar) provides a temporary skill boost to Strength level by 4 + 15% of their Strength level (rounded down). Captured black warlocks may be used in multicombat areas to share the Strength boost with up to three nearby players, provided that they have Accept Aid toggled on.

Hunting technique

The hunting technique is the same as for other butterflies. One jar is needed for each butterfly you wish to keep. All of these items are available for purchase in Hunter shops.

For players that have 85 Farming, there is a black warlock butterfly spawn behind the fruit tree patch in the Farming Guild that does not move, thus a player can continuously click in one spot to gain easy Hunter experience (roughly 35,000 experience per hour). For those without the Farming level, south-west of the Crypt of Tonali and just below the closest mushroom there is a stationary spawn where a player can trap the butterfly and continuously click in one spot. Similarly, for players who have completed or sufficiently progressed Troubled Tortugans, there are multiple black warlock spawns near the sand pit on the Great Conch that respawn after 4.2 seconds on fixed tiles (despite moving around), allowing continuous clicking on their spawn tiles for the same experience rate.
