A box trap is a type of trap used in the Hunter skill to catch ferrets, embertailed jerboas and chinchompas. Using a box trap requires the specific Hunter level needed for the prey, as well as partial completion of the Eagles' Peak quest.

Whenever prey passes a trap, it has a chance of either being caught in the trap or evading it. If the prey is successfully caught, the box trap will close in around the animal and start shaking, at which point the player will have the option to "check" the trap for loot and experience. If the prey evades the trap, the trap will simply close, at which point the player will have to reset it.

Box traps may be bought from Aleck's Hunter Emporium in Yanille, the Nardah Hunter Shop in Nardah, or Imia's Supplies in the Hunter Guild. One can also be obtained for free by searching the crate adjacent to the bookcases in the north-western house at Land's End. They can also be obtained from Hunter kits.

The following Hunter creatures may be caught using the box trapping technique.

Box trapping can be done with multiple traps at once, with the maximum amount of traps depending on the player's Hunter level.

An extra trap may be set while hunting black chinchompas in the wilderness.

Once a box trap has been set, it will make an attempt every 3 ticks (1.8 seconds) to lure in an animal that is currently in range.^[1] Any ferret or chinchompa within a 2-tile radius of the box trap (forming a 5x5 square centred on the trap) can be attracted.^[2] Box traps won't trap prey if players are standing on the trap itself.

The way an animal becomes drawn to a box trap uses the same system of aggressiveness through which a monster becomes focused on the player.^[3]

Adding a creature's corresponding bait to a box trap will increase the catch rate by 3% .^[4] Due to the low increase of the catch rate, most players believe that adding bait to traps doesn't justify the extra cost or clicks.

Smoking a box trap with a torch or bruma torch will increase the catch rate by 2%. A trap may only be smoked once, and smoking a trap does not extinguish the torch. Players may find this beneficial due not having any cost associated, but will need to click two extra times per trap.

Alternatively, players can bring anti-odour salts, which smoke traps automatically but are consumed in the process.

Players can use tick manipulation to place box traps more quickly.

• While in legacy duels at the Emir's Arena
• At the Blast Furnace
• Taverley, Dwarven Mine and Mining Guild
• Wintertodt (including the waiting area) and Ungael's crater
• Tempoross Cove
• Hallowed Sepulchre and The Nightmare fight
• On fairy rings
• Inside most indoor areas
• Farming Guild
• Basement of Doom - while spectating your cat through a curtain
• Lizardman Temple
• Player-owned houses
• Inside banks and next to various bank chests
  • (But next to the bank chest at Trouble Brewing, and the Rogues' Den bank chest is possible)
• Hespori's cave
• Zulrah's shrine
• Catacombs of Kourend
• In underwater areas
• Theatre of Blood
• Near Shura and Sisterhood Sanctuary lobby
• In the Soul Wars Lobby

• If the player attempts to lay a box trap at Ungael's crater, the chatbox will state "It's far too cold for you to setup a trap here." even though other cold areas such as the Ice Path do allow players to set up traps.
• Box traps may be laid to temporarily prevent rockfalls from blocking a path at Motherlode Mine, until the box trap collapses and for a short period thenafter. The falling rocks will still damage the player.
• The animation used for laying a box trap is identical to that of the tinderbox.
• Box traps can be used to move while frozen, as long as you are no longer in combat (ten seconds after the initial freeze). For spells with freezes lasting longer than ten seconds, this means that frozen players can use box traps similarly to mithril seeds when players freeze them and then try to log out under them.
