Runite bars (12,265) are frequently traded due to their use in smithing runite equipment. Instead of visiting a furnace to smelt the bars, players with Magic 43 can cast superheat item to smelt ore into bars from anywhere. This costs the usual ore and coal, as well as a nature rune (and four fire runes, but this requirement can be ignored when a staff of fire is wielded). The advantages of using superheat item (instead of a furnace) is that the spell is faster (3 ticks, or about 1.8 seconds) than smelting at a furnace (4 ticks ~ 2.4 seconds) and the player doesn't waste time walking. This allows bars to be produced signifigantly faster (1100 bars/hour, or better), which more than makes up for the cost of the nature runes.

The player still gets the usual 50 Smithing experience when creating a bar, plus 53 Magic experience as well, making this a profitable way to train both skills.

Be aware that the profit-margin of the method varies on the price of both runite ores and runite bars. Historically, runite ore price has been relatively stable, but due to a moderate trade volume, you may need to wait on transactions in order to maximize profitability. A consequence of these facts is this guide's listed profit may vary from expected.

Using the bars

If you have Smithing 89 (or Smithing 88 and drink a dwarven stout) and Magic 55 , you can smith the runite bars you create into rune swords and then cast high-alchemy on them. This awards an additional 75 Smithing experience per bar (plus 65 Magic experience from HA), as well as produce a (untaxable) consistent 12,480 as an output (or 12,309 if we subtract out the 171 cost of the nature rune used for HA). Though significantly slower (you can do only 300-350 bars per hour if smelting, smithing, and alching) to go through the process of smithing all the bars (one at a time) and then high-alch them, this may be a useful technique to mitigate against a stubborn GE market with a low runite bar price (currently 12,265 before tax).

If you have an even higher smithing level, you can try smithing the bars into even more valuable things for more profit.
