Yew tree (Farming)

Yew trees are Farming plants grown at level 60 Farming. A yew tree is grown by planting a yew seed in a filled plant pot. A gardening trowel is needed to plant the seed, then it must be watered.

After 5 minutes or less, the planted seed will become a yew sapling and can then be transferred to a tree patch. The tree patch must be raked clean of weeds. Compost or supercompost may be added prior to planting, and once planted (using a spade), the nearby farmer may be paid to watch over your tree. Payment is 10 cactus spines and optionally may be noted to save you space.

Planting the yew tree sapling gives 81 farming experience. When checked, a healthy yew tree provides 7,069.9 farming experience. If the farmer does not watch the tree, then disease on the tree may be removed using secateurs. However, if left alone, the diseased tree will die. If buying the yew seed and cactus spine on the Grand Exchange, it will cost around 33,871 per tree, assuming one pays a gardener.

Since the first growth stage of a Yew tree only lasts 5 minutes, a yew tree sapling will take at most 6.083 hours (365 minutes) to mature. An amulet of nature may be bound to the patch to provide progress on its growth. A fully grown yew tree can be cut to yield yew logs and grant Woodcutting experience. Unlike trees found naturally, grown Yew trees have a 1/8 chance to be depleted per log cut. After it is cut down, it will eventually regrow, or a spade may be used on the stump to produce yew roots and clear the patch for planting a new tree. The amount of roots given depends on the player's Farming level (boosts can be used):

• At level 60, a player obtains one yew root.
• At level 68, a player obtains two yew roots.
• At level 76, a player obtains three yew roots.
• At level 84, a player obtains four yew roots.

Harvesting two roots from a yew tree planted in the patch near Varrock Palace is a requirement for the hard Varrock Diary.
