Redwood trees, often referred to as redwoods, are rare lumber trees () that require level 90 Woodcutting to cut, granting 380 Woodcutting experience for each set of redwood logs received. Two scaffolded redwood trees can be found in the Woodcutting Guild, and another one can be grown in the Farming Guild by players with level 90 Farming. Their long depletion timers and moderate experience rate make them ideal trees for low-attention training at higher levels.

Locations

Two levels of scaffolding are built around the redwood trees in the Woodcutting Guild, allowing players to reach the sections of the tree that can be cut. The first level is accessible via rope ladders at the very bottom, located on the east and west sides of the tree. The second level is accessed via carved entrances, located on the side closest to the other redwood tree. Each side that does not have a carved entrance has 2 sections to chop, totaling 12 sections per tree, and 24 sections overall.

Like other trees in the guild, redwood trees do not benefit from the group Woodcutting boost that normally comes from chopping trees alongside other players; however, while inside the guild, players still receive an invisible +7 Woodcutting level boost.

Mechanics

Uniquely, players can obtain only clue nests from redwoods, not seed, ring, or egg bird nests; this also means that the strung rabbit foot and Woodcutting cape perk have no effect when chopping redwood trees.

A section of a redwood tree will deplete after 440 ticks (4 minutes and 24 seconds) of chopping; the depletion timer regenerates if players stop cutting the tree before it is fully chopped. Once depleted, it will take 199 ticks (119.4 seconds) to respawn.

A roll to receive a log is done every 4 game ticks when chopping. The chance to successfully chop is affected by the axe used and Woodcutting level: better axes and a higher woodcutting level increase the likelihood of successfully receiving a log.

Cut chance

The following chart indicates the success rate of chopping a redwood tree with different types of axes.[1][2] It shows that at level 93 and 97 or higher, using a special attack boost with a dragon axe does not improve cut chance. Similarly, at level 90, 94 and 98 or higher, a crystal axe special attack does not improve cut chance. Levels over 99 are only achievable through the invisible boost inside the Woodcutting Guild.

When accounting for the invisible +7 boost provided by the Woodcutting Guild, the special attack of the Dragon Axe does not provide a boost at levels 90, 91, and 95. The special attack of a Crystal Axe will not provide a use while at level 94.

Farming

With level 90 Farming, exclusively in the advanced tier of the Farming Guild, redwood tree seeds may be grown into a redwood tree, which gives redwood logs when cut down. Checking on a fully grown and healthy redwood tree will give 22,450 Farming experience. It takes 4 days to grow. When cut down, the tree will automatically regrow after a period of time. Unlike most lumber trees, it cannot be dug up using a spade, and must be cleared by Alexandra for 2000 coins. A player may also pay her six dragonfruit to guarantee its growth.

Trivia

  • There are several mentions of redwood trees by NPCs around Gielinor as well as in books. The following text is transcluded from Gielinor's flora - trees. The information found within the book is more often than not just flavour text, and does not reflect their properties or uses within the game itself.

Exceptionally large conifer trees and in fact the largest and tallest trees in the world. These trees can live thousands of years. Native to the Kingdoms of Great Kourend and Varlamore, these trees are unfortunately close to extinct in the wild due to heavy deforestation caused by both settlers and various conflicts. Thankfully, due to conservation efforts, a small number of redwoods can still be found, particularly in controlled environments.
