Muddy patches can be found across the Mushroom Forest, located on Fossil Island. The patches are one of the clues found part way into tracking a Herbiboar, and can be inspected to find footprints leading to another clue (You find a partial footprint in the disturbed earth. Something has passed this way.). Occasionally when inspecting the patches players may be awarded 50 Hunter experience, as well as a chance at finding either some numulite or an unidentified fossil.
