The jar of dirt is a rare drop from the Kraken boss.

The jar can be used on a boss lair display in a player's Achievement Gallery to have a display of the Kraken. Doing so requires killing it at least once.

Trivia

The jar of dirt is a reference to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, in which the film's protagonist, Jack Sparrow, receives a jar of dirt that later becomes important to the plot of the film; the owner of the contents of the jar has a 'pet' kraken giving a nod to the monster that drops this item.^[1]
Using a jar of dirt on a jar of sand will cause a bucket of sand-related sound effect to play and the contents of each jar to swap to the other. This is an easter egg initially hinted at by Mod John C on release, but later confirmed by Mod Ash on twitter 5 years later.^[2]
This was the first boss jar released and it was supposed to be untradeable upon release in 2014, however, it was left tradeable accidentally. All subsequent jars until the release of Araxxor and the jar of venom were made tradeable due to this.
