West Ardougne is the western part of the capital city of Ardougne, which has been quarantined due to a mysterious plague. It is only available to players who have partially completed the Plague City quest.
West and East Ardougne originally existed as a single city. Following the death of its king, the city was split in two, with each half going to one of his sons; West Ardougne went to King Tyras, and East Ardougne went to his brother, King Lathas. Unlike Tyras, who embraced those outside Kandarin, Lathas secretly despised his father's willingness to give up power for the sake of others.
Attempts by Tyras to expand west uncovered the Underground Pass, prompting him to explore it. While Tyras was away, King Lathas cordoned off West Ardougne, claiming it was stricken by a plague. Lathas' affiliates then convinced West Ardougne's citizens to blame Tyras, claiming he brought it to the city on one of his expeditions. Blockaded and demoralised, the city soon fell into decay.
The plague was later revealed to be a hoax, created by Lathas in collaboration with the elvenIorwerth Clan. They hoped to take over the city in order to use West Ardougne's citizens as slaves to excavate the tunnels underneath it. The excavation was successful, uncovering the Iorwerth Clan's target: the Temple of Light, which they could be used to summon the Dark Lord for their gain.
During this time, Tyras was fighting against the Iorwerth Clan on the other side of the Underground Pass. He was subsequently killed by an adventurer who had been tricked by Lathas and the Iorwerths. However, the truth was eventually revealed, leading to Lathas' public execution. Following Lathas' death, West Ardougne reunited with the East under the rule of King Thoros.
Transportation
Several teleports bring players in or near West Ardougne, listed here with their teleport destinations:
West Ardougne Teleport — city centre. This is the only direct teleport into West Ardougne.
Ardougne Teleport — East Ardougne. From here, players then have several methods of entry:
Through the pipe under Edmond's house (during and after Plague City).
Via shortcut over the wall via Omart (during Plague City, before returning the distillator to Elena)
Through the main gate from East Ardougne (after Plague City has been completed)
A regular general store, operated by Chadwell in the south-west part of the city.
In addition to the aforementioned buildings, the city contains 45 small square buildings designed as housing, although some of them have completely fallen apart and begun uninhabitable. As such, some of these buildings contain no beds, and some of those that remain intact have multiple beds inside them. Notably, the largest housing area is found on the western side of the city, near the graveyard. This area contains men, women, rats, children and civilians. Players can talk to one of the civilians in this area to sell their cat or overgrown cat for 100 death runes (200 after completion of the easy Ardougne Diary).
There is also an empty building east of the Rehnison house.
Graveyard
There is a large graveyard filled with ghosts and zombies, south of the main residential area. They quite low levels, and the numerous tombstones make it easy to trap them. This spot is therefore sometimes used by those seeking a zombie champion scroll.
The lore of the city was changed following the release of Song of the Elves, and the script of Mourning's End Part I was changed accordingly. Originally, King Lathas handed over complete control of the city to the Iorwerth Clan, due to being tricked by them into fearing attacks by Iban.
