Crypt rats are rats lurking in the Barrows tunnels. Crypt rats are one of the many obstacles between a player and the chest containing rewards where they constantly distract players from completing puzzles. As with all monsters in the crypts, they are aggressive to any player regardless of their combat level. They may spawn whenever the player opens a door in the tunnels.

Players can command their cats to attempt to catch the crypt rat, but cats of all types will refuse to go after it, with varying dialogue depending on the cat type. Wily cats will even damage the player for 3 hitpoints if they try to make it catch a crypt rat, which is capable of being lethal if the player is at 3 hitpoints or lower.

Killing a crypt rat will increase the player's rewards potential by 43 (4.25%).
