Maxilla beasts are encountered in the forests of Vampyrium during The Blood Moon Rises. Players must sneak past them by walking instead of running and also maintaining sufficient distance; as they are blind, they can only detect humans in close proximity by hearing.

Running within 9 tiles of a Maxilla beast will cause it to pursue the player, indicated by the "A nearby maxilla beast hears your quick movements..." message. Walking within 2 tiles of a Maxilla beast will cause it to attack and knock down the player, indicated by the "A nearby maxilla beast hears you moving..." message. If a player stands next to a maxilla beast, regardless of if they are running, walking, or standing still, the beast will knock them down, dealing heavy damage, indicated by the "At this proximity, a nearby maxilla beast becomes aware of your presence..." message.

Maxilla beasts cannot be defeated using recoil damage.
