Fermentation Vat are found inside the asylum of Ghorrock Prison, where Duke Sucellus slumbers. They are used to brew arder-musca poisons to weaken and force him to wake up.

Originally, the fight had four types of mushrooms available to be picked from - arder, musca, resper, and holos mushrooms - which could be used to create six combinations of poisons to weaken Duke Sucellus. Presumably, all but one were scrapped to make the fight simpler, with the vats containing the other five being added but unused in-game.
