The Sage was an NPC introduced in the Shattered Relics League, who acted as its Leagues Tutor.

Lore

The Sage is a powerful being responsible for running game modes such as Leagues and Grid Master. They describe themselves as someone who is "whatever is needed of me"[1] and "undefined by natural laws, manifested by someone we mustn't speak of".[2] They are capable of various feats, such as the creation (as well as the shattering)[3] of Leagues relics, travelling through layers of reality,[4] tampering with memories,[5] providing powerful boons that increase combat prowess,[6] and awakening "the wrathful spirits of enemies" (unleashing Echo bosses) across the world.[7]

In the Shattered Relics League, the Sage revealed context for Leagues. As seen in the opening cinematic, The Sage saved the player from the previous league (which was in some way destroyed as it ended), bringing them to a new "layer" of reality where the Shattered Relics League took place by travelling through the River of Souls.[8] In exchange for saving the player's life, the Sage requests that the player be entertaining for their master and the "eyes beyond our own"[9][10], and promises that the player's participation will result in their continued existence, whereas refusing will end in their destruction.[11]

During the Demonic Pacts League, the Sage was taken hostage by the demon Yama, who threatened them with incomprehensible torture[12] if they refused to grant him safe passage through the River of Souls after the end of the League.[13] Despite them having been caught off guard by Yama's actions,[14] the Sage urged the player not to worry and instead focus on participating in the League as normal.[15]

The Sage's unknown master and source of their power was planned to be a new god called Kronis, although this was either scrapped or left unrevealed due to concerns over the addition of a new god out of nowhere being unfitting for existing lore.[16] The Sage may have been created as a compromise,[17] and aspects of Kronis' design can still be seen in the Sage, with it being more prominent in the Sage's concept sketches.

The Art Director (Mod AK, no longer here) had commissioned some character art of a new god, to be called Chronos or something like that, who'd be a godly power underpinning Leagues. Others in the team felt that it'd be unfitting for existing lore if a new god got introduced out of nowhere like that."
