Black dragons can be assigned as a slayer task at level 80 combat by various Slayer masters after partial completion of Dragon Slayer I.

Black dragons are the rarest of chromatic dragons. As with all other chromatic dragons, they use melee and short-ranged dragonfire. When killing the standard variant of Black dragons, its recommended to use Protect from Melee and basic dragonfire protection (such as an anti-dragon shield and extended antifire potion), as the dragons are quite accurate and hit relatively hard.

Players can additionally kill baby black dragons, brutal black dragons, or the King Black Dragon as alternatives for a black dragon task.

While most variants of black dragons can be very profitable to kill, optimal strategies involve either quickly killing baby black dragons (as they are easily accessible in Taverley Dungeon with the task-only area) or brutal black dragons (which require 77 Slayer).

If deciding to kill Brutal black dragons for the generous drops, be aware that they have additional attack types to consider. Brutal black dragons have long-ranged dragonfire and a ranged magical attack that will deal high amounts of damage. An effective strategy for killing them involves bringing your strongest crossbow and using Protect from Magic while standing out of melee range. While the Dragon hunter crossbow is the most effective, much more affordable options like the Hunters' sunlight crossbow, Dragon crossbow, or even Rune crossbow can be sufficient.

Faster methods involve using the Dragon hunter lance or other melee. With melee methods, keep Protect from Magic on at all times and use a flinching strategy to avoid the dragon's accurate melee attacks.

If killing baby dragons, go to Taverley Dungeon and utilise the task-only area; there are five spawns (in a group of two and three respectively) which can be AFK'ed to quickly complete the task.

If killing normal dragons, the ones in the Corsair Cove Dungeon are the closest to a bank, with a quick Mythical cape teleport to go back and forth.

Players who have started the Freeing Sir Amik Varze sub quest in Recipe for Disaster can also sacrifice a raw chicken at the Chicken Shrine in Zanaris to access the Evil Chicken’s lair, home to several black dragons and in close proximity to the Zanaris bank.

In the Wilderness, the player only has two options to choose from; the Lava Maze Dungeon and the Wilderness Slayer Cave. The former is significantly troublesome to access without 82 Agility (boostable), as this would require the player to traverse the entire Lava Maze and bring a knife to cut webs. The latter is far more accessible, but the dragons are slightly stronger and the cave itself is both a multicombat area and a popular player killing spot. In the slayer cave, players are still able to teleport out with a one-click teleport such as a royal seed pod, though they must be safespotted.

If killing the King Black Dragon, players should not bring any items they are unwilling to lose. While the trek from the level 44 Wilderness Obelisk to the King Black Dragon's lair is very short, it is a popular player killing spot and escape is likely impossible if attacked by a player killer.
