Missable content

Missable content is a community-given term for in-game content (items, unlocks, dialogue) that can become permanently inaccessible on an account after a certain point, often without any prior indication that this will be the case.

The gravestone of Jarvis is only visible if certain criteria was met.

While the Old School RuneScape developers generally try to avoid creating missable content, for example by giving the players the items from previous holidays upon completion of a holiday event, or through various game updates which have made certain items re-obtainable after being discovered to be missable, many pieces of missable content still remain.

Time-gated content

Certain limited-time events contained content that, once unlocked, persisted even after the removal of the event. As few events have ever been repeated, some pieces of content have become impossible to unlock for players that did not complete these events.

Seasonal events and competitions

Participation in limited-time seasonal events, such as Leagues, can give rewards available in the main game. Although most rewards are tradeable, depending on your performance in the event you can receive and reclaim unique untradeable trophies.

Jack, Jeff, and Jill

The three children Jack, Jeff, and Jill, located in Musa Point, are only visible to players who froze all the Gublinch during the 2013 Christmas event.

PvM Arena

The PvM Arena is an area that was used as part of the 2015 Clan Cup, accessible by the Clan Cup portal which can be found upstairs in the building north of Edgeville bank. This portal can only be used by players who participated in the event in 2015, who were manually given access to it by Jagex. While the event has long since ended, the PvM activity located within the arena is still able to be initiated if 2 eligible players enter the portal.

Jarvis' grave

Players who failed to save Jarvis during the 2017 Halloween event can find his grave in the Lumbridge Graveyard. It is not visible to players who did not participate in the event, or those who did participate but did not let Jarvis die. This also affects the answer to the medium clue scroll step in which Father Aereck asks how many graves are present in the graveyard, with the answer becoming 20 (instead of 19) for players who failed to save Jarvis. Those that cannot see the grave instead have a bush in its place.

Wizard Grayzag dialogue

After completing the 20th Anniversary event, Wizard Grayzag will have a specific dialogue related to the green gnome child that was present during the event. He will also have another bit of dialogue related to his son Gary Grayzag after the 25th Anniversary event.

Rick dialogue

If the player completed the 2020 Halloween event, Rick, the wizard in the Wizards' Tower, has a special dialogue option about how the player helped him return to normal during the event.

Luthas dialogue

During the 2021 Birthday event, players could talk to Luthas to permanently unlock some unique dialogue. Players would have to go out of their way to speak to him, which was entirely optional, as he was otherwise unrelated to the event, and was only briefly mentioned a single time in passing by Zeke.

Iffie dialogue

If the player completed the 2021 Halloween event, Iffie, located in Thessalia's Makeovers in Varrock, has a special dialogue option in which she reminisces about her 'adventure' during the event.

Gilbert dialogue

If the player completed the 2022 Pride event, Gilbert has slightly different dialogue when asked about the flower meadow he is standing in, with Gilbert thanking the player for helping him make the meadow colourful. Likewise, if the player completed the 2024 Pride event Gilbert also has slightly different dialogue when referring to the items that can be reclaimed from him.

Goose dialogue

If the player completed the 2023 Christmas event, petting Goose will cause them to look at player knowingly, reminding them of their Christmas Achievements. This will cause a window to open which showcases the players' Christmas Achievements in detail.

Luck-dependent content

Torn quetzal whistle blueprints

Both the Torn enhanced quetzal whistle blueprint and Torn perfected quetzal whistle blueprint can only be obtained if the player does not receive the untorn versions of these items from Hunters' loot sacks within 100 or 250 openings of expert and master loot sacks respectively. While there is no way to influence which drops are obtained from these loot sacks, it is entirely possible to avoid opening any Adept or higher tier loot sack until 100 and 250 rumours have been completed in order to obtain both blueprints.

Quest-locked content

Some quests contain specific events that can only be seen if specific criteria are met, or contain permanent choices that cannot be undone once selected.

Alyssa's dialogue

Using the Kharedst's memoirs on Alyssa will prompt unique dialogue depending on whether all 6 pages have been added to the book. After completion of A Kingdom Divided, once the memoirs are upgraded to the book of the dead, this dialogue is no longer accessible.

Chest in Klenter's Pyramid

The chest containing 50 coins in Klenter's Pyramid cannot be reached after completion of Icthlarin's Little Helper.

Crazy penguins

During the Cold War quest, the player reports to a fellow KGP member that they learned how to fly. If the player completed Enlightened Journey and Between a Rock... before giving the report to the KGP member, a crazy penguin in a hot air balloon and a crazy penguin in a cannon will appear at the start of the Penguin Agility Course, respectively. If the player had not completed one of these quests at the time they gave the report to the KGP member, the crazy penguin in question will be replaced with a wooden platform.

Phoenix Gang vs Black Arm Gang

During the Shield of Arrav quest, the player must choose to join either the Phoenix Gang or the Black Arm Gang. Either choice will not only affect the quest's dialogue and quest line, but it will permanently determine which gang stronghold the player account gets to access. Jonny the Beard will also permanently disappear for those who joined the Phoenix Gang. Furthermore, the choice will also change the experience during the Hero's Quest.

Taking sides in the Temple of Ikov

The player is able to take sides in the Temple of Ikov quest between Lucien and the Guardians of Armadyl. The choice will not only effect the quest's dialogue and quest line, but it will permanently determine how to get a new Armadyl Pendant on that account -- with those siding with the Guardians of Armadyl simply needing to ask for a new pendant, while those siding with Lucien needing to kill Guardians of Armadyl to get a new pendant. Further, the choice will impact the content of Elias' message, which is connected to the Curse of Arrav quest.

Quest-locked items

Some items can only be obtained if the player makes specific choices during quests, or makes certain actions before undertaking quests.

Hazeel's mark and Carnillean armour

During Hazeel Cult, the player may obtain either the Carnillean armour or Hazeel's mark depending on whether or not they choose to assist Ceril Carnillean. Helping Ceril will grant the player the chance to receive Carnillean armour but will prevent ever receiving the mark. Conversely, siding with the cultists will grant the mark but will prevent receiving the armour. Note that Carnillean armour is visually identical to the decorative red platebody from Castle Wars; Hazeel's mark is entirely unique.

Copper's crimson collar

After Client of Kourend, using wolf bones on Veos will trigger a side quest in which you can retrieve Copper's crimson collar for him. This side quest is rendered inaccessible after progressing through A Kingdom Divided.

Ardougne knight platelegs

During Song of the Elves, if the player does not meet the defence requirements for steel platelegs, they can ask Edmond to polish them to turn them into ardougne knight platelegs. Edmond will only offer this service if the very low defence requirements are unable to be met. This is usually only the case with certain account builds, such as pures.

Irretrievable equipable items

Some equipable items with unique visual appearances can no longer be obtained upon completion of certain quests, and special care needs to be taken in order to retain them.

Crystal pendant

During Regicide, players obtain the crystal pendant. However, pendants in the player's bank and equipped to their character will be removed when speaking to Lord Iorwerth and King Lathas. The crystal pendant must be on the ground to retain it after the dialogues.

Silver necklace

After Murder Mystery, the silver necklace, silver cup, silver bottle, silver book, silver needle and silver pot can be kept. They are not usable, though the silver necklace can be worn.

Untrimmed skillcapes

Untrimmed skillcapes are obtained upon reaching level 99 in a skill while having no other level 99 skills. Only one type of untrimmed skillcape can be obtained per account, corresponding to the first skill in which the player reaches level 99, making other untrimmed skillcapes permanently missable.

Once a second level 99 skill is obtained, existing untrimmed skillcapes will automatically become trimmed versions, and the untrimmed variant of the first skillcape becomes irretrievable by normal means. However, players may preserve untrimmed skillcapes through the use of telekinetic grab, Chambers of Xeric storage, Death's Office, and other item preservation methods.

Update-locked content

Some now-unobtainable items were previously able to be acquired by players, who were occasionally able to keep them even after the items were made unobtainable by a game update.
