25th Anniversary event

The 25th Anniversary event, titled 25 Years, 25 Mementos, was a holiday event celebrating the 25th anniversary of the RuneScape franchise, which began with the public beta release of RuneScape Classic (originally called "RuneScape") on 4 January 2001. It also commemorates the 13th birthday of Old School RuneScape, released on 22 February 2013.

During the event, players assisted Gary, the son of Wizard Grayzag, in gathering artefacts from Varrockian citizens that evoke powerful memories. In doing so, he hopes to open a time travel portal leading to the Realm of Memories, thus proving to his father that he is a fully qualified wizard and completing his apprenticeship.

Various red- and yellow-coloured decorations were added to Varrock, Falador, Lumbridge, and Ardougne for the event, including bunting, birthday balloons, birthday banners, and large banners reading "HAPPY ANNIVERSARY". The Falador Party Room is also decorated, and slices of birthday cake can be taken from the birthday cake there. Two tables can be found either side of the cake, with past event rewards being visible on them.

To start the event, speak to Gary in southern Varrock, by the cabbage patch just outside the building south-east of the Blue Moon Inn. He will introduce himself as the son of Wizard Grayzag, and will tell you he is trying to prove himself worthy of being a fully qualified wizard. He is attempting to open a portal to the Realm of Memories, which his father had done some time ago, but that he needs various mementos that invoke the most powerful memories of RuneScape to do so. Gary asks you for help in gathering these mementos, each of which represents the experience players gain while training the game's 24 skills. Agree to help him.

Note: If you use any teleports or move too far away from the locations featured in the event, Gary will stop following and you will need to collect him at the event's start point.

With Gary in tow, you will now need to speak to the following people in Varrock in any order:

After gathering all 24 mementos, return to the house where you met Gary, and go up the stairs. Gary will tell you that one more memento is needed to open the portal, that being a cabbage, which he says represents RuneScape itself. If you do not already have a cabbage, go back downstairs and pick one from the patch nearby. Give the cabbage to Gary, who turns it into the RuneScape memento.

With all of the mementos gathered, Gary successfully casts a spell and opens a portal to the Realm. Go inside the portal, and Gary and Wizard Grayzag will follow. Impressed by the ritual, Wizard Grayzag will give his son a new wand, officially making Gary a qualified wizard. Thankful for your help, Gary will then give you the event rewards.

After completing this event players will receive:

• Two noted half full wine jugs
• All other birthday rewards from previous years can be (re)obtained from Diango.

• The memento board. Each tile represents one of the 24 skills, with the central tile representing RuneScape as a whole

• Most of the items used for the mementos are items that existed at the launch of RuneScape Classic.
• If the player has completed the 20th Anniversary event, Gary will note that the player previously helped Wizard Grayzag create a portal to the Realm of Memories.
• If the player has completed Imp Catcher, they will tell Gary that they helped retrieve the beads stolen by Wizard Grayzag's imps.
• When talking to Horvik, he mentions Gary's request of a memento as a "favour", referencing his role in the quest One Small Favour.
  • If the player has completed One Small Favour, they will adamantly state the request is "definitely not about a favour".
• If the player has completed Rune Mysteries, Aubury will credit the player with helping to rediscover the rune essence mine. If Rune Mysteries is not completed, Aubury will still have rune essence to give to Gary, but he will mention that he bought the rune essence from traveling merchants.
• If the player has completed Daddy's Home, Old Man Yarlo will recognize the player and thank them for helping with his home.
• If the player has completed Vampyre Slayer, Dr. Harlow will recognize the player for giving him beer during that quest.
