Merodach as it appeared on one of Old School RuneScape's livestreams in 2013.

Merodach was an unreleased group boss developed around mid-2013, just months after the release of Old School RuneScape. The boss, a white dragon, was intended to be the Old School RuneScape equivalent of Vorago from RuneScape 3,[1] having both combat and skilling aspects,[2] as well as some sort of rage mechanic.[3]

Merodach was developed out of Mod Reach's desire to create his own boss after having QA tested other bosses,[4] as well as to have a place to put the white dragon equipment that he had created prior.[5] He also wanted to create something that was more advanced than the typical "click and wait" that most bosses at the time were.[6] However, the boss was not designed with the guarantee it would be added to the game, instead being more to test the limits of what can be done for future boss encounters.[7]

Merodach would never make it into the game, as Jagex felt at the time that with the release of the God Wars Dungeon, more end-game boss encounters were not a priority, so they instead focused on the early and mid-game, along with fixing some long-standing bugs.[8]

Known in-game information

Merodach is summoned by two dragonkin.

Merodach would have been located in a cave on Trollweiss Mountain, whose entrance was surrounded by skeletons as well as an injured soldier who would warn the player about the dragon, sharing the same model as Sir Gerry. Attempting to enter the cave would warn players with a chatbox message stating: Be warned! This boss will test not only your ability in combat, but your reliability as a teammate. Death is inevitable for even the most experienced boss hunter. You have been warned!

Merodach, who appeared as a larger steel dragon recoloured to be white, was a dragonkin experiment gone wrong, furious after being imprisoned for many years.[9] Its examine text said it was An ancient Dragon, born in the First Age.

Upon entering the cave, which was a copy of the King Black Dragon Lair (with the floor recoloured to white to represent snow), two dragonkin would appear and summon the level-2000 Merodach, whom they refer to as "the Guardian". It would rapidly attack with dragonfire, being capable of using the same type of ice and poison dragon breath attacks that the King Black Dragon has.[10]

Rather than dropping items directly, Merodach would have been guarding a chest that players could loot after defeating it, similar to Barrows.[11]. Additionally, players would have been able to obtain white versions of dragon equipment as rewards, though the equipment would not have dropped directly, but instead as something like "white dragon energy" that could be used to recolour existing dragon equipment.[12]

Trivia

  • "Merodach" is both the name of a Babylonian god and an anagram for Mod Reach.
