Chest (Rogues' Castle)/Strategies
This copy was last processed on . The copied wiki revision is dated .
The chests in the Rogues' Castle in the deep Wilderness offers the fastest Thieving experience in the game and can be very lucrative as a money maker. While the site is one of the most active player killing hotspots, the June 2026 changes to untradeable items always sent to the gravestone allow for extremely fast resets with zero risk aside from loss of loot, which can be managed by dying to self-inflicted damage at regular intervals.
The chest requires the medium Wilderness Diary to receive loot, but the hard Wilderness Diary will increases the quantity of most stacked loot by 15 to 25%.
Although the goal here is to manage risk, the Wilderness is still very dangerous. Always check your Items Kept on Death and your PK Skull Prevention setting to avoid losing items you are not prepared to lose. It's possible that further changes to death mechanics may change the status some of the equipment in this article, so again, always check your items kept on death.

Overview
The recommended loop is as follows:
- Travel to the Rogues' Castle using the Level-50 Wilderness Obelisk destination.
- Begin looting and keep hitpoints very low using non-deadly self-inflicted damage.
- Wait for an interval of time or until inventory value crosses a threshold.
- See the following section for calculations on risk.
- Use the deadly form of self-inflicted damage to die.
- It's also possible to disable Protect from Melee and let the rogues kill you, but this is less reliable.
- Retrieve items from Death's Office.
- All loot from the chests is worth less than 100,000 coins, so there is no retrieval fee.
- Prayer potions will never go to a gravestone in the Wilderness, and will be lost unless they are a protected item.
- Bank, reset inventory, and teleport to a Player-owned house with a constructed obelisk or to reach the Ferox Enclave. Return to step one.
Visiting Death, banking, resetting, and returning to the chests takes less than two minutes if respawning in Edgeville, Ferox Enclave, or Prifddinas as all have Death's Office and a bank relatively close to one another.
Entering the Rogues' Castle
The Chaos Elemental wanders around the southern and western sides of the castle. It has a max hit of 28 which ignores prayer, so it's advised to keep health above that mark until on the inside of the eastern wall or near the chests.
The courtyard with the chests contains numerous level-135 rogues who are not initially aggressive. Once a chest is opened, the rogues will all attack the player. Their damage can be completely blocked by Protect from Melee which is mandatory to sustain sessions longer than a minute or two. It's also recommended to use a Menu entry swapper to set their default click to "Walk here" to avoid pointlessly attacking them. Edmond also usually gets stuck within the rogues and should be treated similarly to avoid opening his shop.
Consider as well making "Search for traps" the default option for the chests themselves, and highlighting open and closed chests in different colors using Runelite.
Dealing with PKers
Depending on the time of day, day of the week, type of world, and other factors, it's entirely possible to have multiple uninterrupted suicide loops as given above. However, it is inevitable that player-killers will eventually pay a visit to the rogue's castle to try to take your loot.
Player-killers typically world hop while standing in the courtyard or around the corner in the open enclosure immediately east of the chests. Their goal is to attack as quickly as possible because any death that occurs after combat begins will count as a PvP death, even if no damage is dealt. If you use the deadly item, but see a magic or ranged projectile, a melee hitsplat (even zero), the freezing animation from Ice spells, or are teleblocked, it is overwhelmingly likely that your death will count as PvP and Death's office will only contain only your untradeable equipment.
To consistently keep loot, be ready to react quickly:
- Maintain low hitpoints.
- Keep the cursor mouse over the suicide item as much as possible.
- Wait until your character is adjacent to the chest before clicking to unlock it.
- Use plugins which flash the screen when other players are visible in the Wilderness, or use one which highlights them.
- There is no way to adjust the draw distance of other players.
Once the player begins to unlock the chest, no other action can be taken until it's open. This take at least a few ticks. As player-killers are usually ready immediately, this means that sometimes dying to a player-killer is unavoidable. It's for this reason that players seeking to balance monetary reward with experience rates will want to determine when to suicide ahead of time.
Alternatively, the most Wilderness-experienced players can not plan to suicide at all and try to surprise PKers by switching to a tanky combat loadout, but they will start with a disadvantage regardless. Keeping health high and trying to escape is another option, and using the stairs within the castle itself or running around the opposite side of the castle may buy enough time to logout, but this will not always be successful.
There also exist clan channels organising mass gatherings which player-killers avoid for being too risky. Multiple players can loot from the chests together in sync.
Players should keep their Private chat set to Friends so that a player-killer cannot add them to their friends list and see which world they're on.
After being killed, it is generally safe to return as the player-killers continue to hop. Most are working through the world list systematically.
Determining When to Die
The individual player must determine when they want to suicide rather than wait for a player-killer, if at all. The experience rates here are realistic with high concentration. Slightly faster rates are possible at higher Thieving levels. The two minute mark is given to show the opportunity cost of banking. As the probability of a player-killer appearing during each period cannot be calculated, it may be helpful to consider these figures represent not only the player's own reward, but that which is denied to a player-killer.
Inventory
The inventory displayed on the right should be reset with each death.
- The Locator orb from Dragon Slayer II deals 10 points of damage and is used to lower hitpoints below 4 and keep them there so that dying occurs immediately when needed. It is always kept on death and cannot kill the player. The Dwarven rock cake from Recipe for Disaster is a decent substitute but requires several more clicks than the Locator orb.
- The Araxyte venom sac deals 4 damage and will kill a player that has kept their health below that.
- The blighted super restore bridges time to when a chest yields a Prayer potion(2). The per-dose cost is 722. For players with high prayer levels and access to high prayer bonus, this may be unnecessary. See the Example Setups section for discussion.
- The Teleport to house (tablet) is not brought to the Wilderness, as it would be useless at the Rogues' Castle, but is a quick way to go from the bank to a House Obelisk or reach the Ferox Enclave, if not respawning there. When on the standard spellbook this can be replaced with a Law rune and Dust rune.
A Looting bag is unhelpful, as it is always lost on death, and there are not enough individual items in the chest to fill up an entire inventory.
Setup
Since the June 2026 Trouver system rework, untradeable items never lost on death with high Prayer bonus are preferred even over low-cost options. Some equipment worth less than a dragonstone, such as mitres, stoles, croziers, or even the previous Wilderness staple of Monk's robes may be best-in-slot or a viable alternative, but the convenience of retrieving everything from Death at once and not buying replacements may override the marginal prayer bonus.
As with many Wilderness activities, it's important to choose which three items will be protected on death. The Sunfire fanatic armour set, Bonecrusher necklace/Dragonbone necklace, Devout boots, Holy wraps, and Ring of the gods (i) all offer best-in-slot prayer bonus, but must be compared against the untradeable and low-value options.
The largest additional bonuses for items which will be protected come from the Ring of the gods (i) (+4 over its unimbued version, +6 over the Ring of shadows, and +7 over Explorer's rings) and the Devout boots (+4 over both feet slot options). The largest bonus for a low value item over always-gravestone items is represented by the +7 bonus of stoles over Salve amulets.
As prayer bonus is the objective, using Protect Item to protect a fourth item is not viable. Under most conditions, it takes an additional prayer bonus of about +13 to adjust for the drain rate of Protect Item, which cannot be achieved when considering the fourth best bonuses.
Equipping, none, one, or two valuable items will allow Dragonstones to be kept even in a PvP death. Prayer potions and Diamonds will also protect over the items always sent to gravestone in this table.
This table is not a complete ranking of prayer bonus by slot, which can be found in the slot tables linked from Worn Equipment. Other considerations apply. For example, the untradeable Hallowed flail has the same prayer bonus as a crozier while being always sent to a gravestone, but it has a value of 80,000 and may cause tradeable items like the Dragonbone necklace to be inadvertently risked. The Proselyte sallet is equal to the Elite black full helm, but in absolute terms is barely less expensive than a mitre. An Amulet of fury has more prayer bonus than salve amulets, but is inferior to the cheaper options which would be listed above it. At the low end, vestment cloaks may be inexpensive, but the requirements for the Ardougne cloak 2 are low compared to the requirements for looting the chests.
Players should be advised that both GE and alchemy values can change from market fluctuations or game updates. Always check your Items Kept on Death interface to ensure nothing important will be lost.
Example Setups
This section has four examples of setups using the equipment recommended on this page. As prayer bonus is in service to reaching the first Prayer potion(2) from the chest each trip, consider this probability table.
| Chance to receive one Prayer potion(2) | Time in seconds at 435 chests opened per hour |
|---|---|
| 50% | 182 |
| 75% | 372 |
| 90% | 621 |

This setup using Protect Item drains faster than the 3-Item setup because it adds only 2 prayer bonus. It is not presently possible to add enough Prayer bonus from a fourth item to make up for the drain from Protect Item.
