Rats can be assigned as a slayer task from Turael and Spria. They have no requirements to be assigned. There are a wide variety of rats that can count toward the task, but the most commonly killed are rats and giant rats, which are low-level, rarely deal damage, and practically ubiquitous. It is recommended to use Rat bone weapons as it has greatly increased effectiveness against rats.

Scurrius can be fought for greater experience and profit, although his minions will also decrement the task, reducing how many times the boss can be fought on task. Brine rats are accessible during Olaf's Quest, and drop medium clues and the elusive brine sabre.

Hell-rat behemoths can be accessed after Freeing Evil Dave, and drop full spice shakers for spicy stews. Crypt rat and giant crypt rat variations require completion of Priest in Peril for access to Morytania and may be slain by players for the higher Slayer experience reward or for changing their reward potential inside the Barrows minigame.
