The panning tray is a quest item used during The Dig Site quest to retrieve a special cup. One spawns in the tent near the south-eastern shore of the Digsite east of Varrock.
To use it, the panning guide must be bribed with a cup of tea or nettle tea. This can be done before the quest is started.
In addition to the special cup found during the quest, other items can be found, such as an opal (one of which is needed in the quest), gold nuggets (three of which can be exchanged for a piece of gold ore), an oyster, an uncut opal, an uncut jade, coins, or just plain mud, which yields no items. Panning provides 2 Fishing experience and 2 Mining experience.
