The Kharidian–Zarosian War was a series of major battles in the northern Kharidian Lands in the Second Age. Zaros had been expanding his empire which shared a border with the Kharidian lands, which were ruled over by a group of gods called the Menaphite Pantheon.
The war started from simple border skirmishes, that broke out due to the Menaphites fear of the expanding Zarosian Empire, whom the Menaphites named the "Ruinous Powers".[1] To hold back the Zarosian forces, the gods of the Menaphite Pantheon granted their people powerful weapons.[2] Despite this, the Zarosians remained on the winning side, quickly conquering the Menaphite's terrain.
Icthlarin, the Menaphite god of the dead, left Gielinor to seek powerful allies, and eventually arrived to the war-ridden plane of Freneskae. There, he convinced many members of the extremely powerful race of Mahjarrat to swear allegiance to him and vanquish the Zarosian armies.[3] He then took the Mahjarrat with him to Gielinor, whom the Menaphites named as Icthlarin's Stern Judges.[4]
Over the next few years with the Mahjarrat's aid, Icthlarin was able to gradually drive back the Zarosian forces out of the Kharidian Lands.[5] However, once Osmumten became the Pharaoh, the Mahjarrat defected to the Zarosian Empire as a result of Sliske, who'd convinced them to abandon Icthlarin.[6]
The Zarosian forces, now with the Mahjarrat added to their ranks, once again pushed the Menaphites back.[7] In a desperate last stand, the god Tumeken sacrificed himself using a magical blast of fire, causing the total annihilation of the armies on both sides and devastation the surrounding area, resulting in the once lush lands becoming a desert.[8]
Osmumten, despite having led the Kharidians with the support of the Menaphite Pantheon, was largely blamed for the result the war had wrought on his people, and was killed with the rest of his family,[9] save his son Mehhar, who went into hiding in Ullek.[10] Prior to his death, Osmumten was tasked with hiding the powerful weapons the Menaphite Pantheon had granted them; two of these were buried with him in the Jaltevas Pyramid,[11] which are said to be able to transfer a god's divinity to another, allowing the receiver to ascend to godhood.[12]
