The information is subject to change. As the wiki is not a crystal ball, this article should consist only of facts included in official Jagex releases and not speculation.

The following is a list of confirmed upcoming updates, derived from official Jagex sources.

Confirmed updates

Updates in this section have either passed a poll or have been otherwise officially confirmed.

Upgrading official game client

On 15 June 2021, Jagex released a blog to announce changes being implemented onto the official Steam Client to match its general usability with the more popular third-party clients, such as RuneLite. These are typically features that are widely used on third-party clients as separate plugins, such as ground tile markers and on-screen infoboxes, as well as unique features, such as zooming the minimap. The changes are rolled out gradually.

On 27 July 2024, Jagex released an update blog outlining the work done to the official client so far in 2024.

Official HD Mode

First mentioned at the Winter Summit 2024, the official client will receive an official HD Mode, similar to that of RuneLite's 117 HD plugin or the HDOS client. The official HD mode will feature fully dynamic lighting, sunlight effects, and fog, while retaining the 2007 models.

A public beta for a new renderer on the official client was announced on 3 July 2025. A progress update was made on 19 August 2025. As of 27 October 2025, a beta release for the official HD mode is currently slated for 2026.

Official Client Plugin API

First mentioned at the Winter Summit 2024, the Official Client will also receive a public Plugin API, allowing players to create and use their own custom plugins for the Official Client, similar to RuneLite's Plugin Hub. The Plugin API will use the Lua[1] programming language.

It was announced on 25 January 2026 at the Winter Summit 2026 that work on a plugin API for the official client is being paused to allow for more work on official HD and mobile improvements.

Summer Sweep Up II

With the success of 2024's Project Rebalance and the 2025 Summer Sweep-Up, Jagex is looking to make them an annual occurrence. No specific changes were given during the Summit, but Jagex planned to announce more details at a later date. Player feedback over the years has provided a healthy handful of possible targets, so expect to see skilling improvements, combat feel/QoL tweaks, perhaps some light gear rebalancing, and a smattering of smaller change.

Sequel quest to an existing storyline

A sequel quest to Olaf's Quest, known as The Graveyard, a master level quest, is expected to be released in Autumn 2026, after passing the Winter Summit 2026 poll.

The quest will also be released alongside a new Agility course requiring 65 and 80 Agility in a manner similar to the Colossal Wyrm course.

New Barracuda Trial

A fourth, new Barracuda Trial is expected to be released in 2027, after passing the Winter Summit 2026 poll. It is intended to be challenging, intense, fast, and tougher than the existing three trials, pushing player's Sailing skills further than ever.

NPC Boat Combat

Boat enemies, also known as Pirate Encounters, passed the Winter Summit 2026 poll and were originally intended to be released alongside the Red Reef. However, they were pushed back to a future date.[2]

Sea expansion

New content in the Eastern, Untamed, Forgotten or Sunset Oceans is expected to be released in Winter 2026 or beyond, after passing the Winter Summit 2026 poll. This update may be tied to other updates, such as the new Sequel Quest, another area update, or the new Barracuda Trial.

Fishing spots at sea

Fishing spots at sea are expected to be added to areas in the sea at a later date, after passing the Winter Summit 2026 poll. This will allow players to do regular Fishing from their boat.

Bingo system

On 2 September 2025, Jagex released a blog announcing that, once the Grid Master event ends on 12 November 2025, that they'll be "looking to implement the [Bingo] system into the main game". This was confirmed at the Winter Summit 2026, with release planned for Autumn 2026.

The Fractured Archive

A new raid named The Fractured Archive is planned to release in late 2026. The name, theme, and some additional details were released at the Winter Summit 2026.[3] It is planned to be a boss rush in the vein of Theatre of Blood, without puzzle or skilling rooms.[4]

PvP Tutorial

In the 2026 summer campfire, a new PvP tutorial was announced. Taking place in Ferox Enclave, players will take on a variety of challenges that teach and test skills relevant to PvP. These include the following:

  • Switching overhead prayers
  • Switching gear
  • Combo-eating multiple pieces of food in the same game tick
  • Escaping players using freezes

Planned updates

Updates in this section have been mentioned or widely accepted by the Old School Team, and may be polled or implemented in the future.

Refreshed looks of Great Kourend

Mod West, an artist at Jagex, has expressed desire to rework and rearrange some locations belonging to Great Kourend, in order for them to feel more inclusive and immersive. Hosidius and Shayzien have previously been redesigned, on 23 May 2019 and 16 June 2021 respectively. At the moment, Arceuus and Lovakengj are pending.

Moreover, the update to Shayzien did not introduce, alongside it, any new concept or redesign of the Catacombs of Kourend, as West had previously proposed through his social media, where his initial concept featured a reduction in the variety of foes, which at the same time would have gotten rid of some NPCs that "didn't quite fit", like cyclopes.

Tumeken's shadow adjustments

On 28 March 2025, Jagex revised a blog acknowledging that there are fundamental issues with Tumeken's shadow that effectively dictate what they can and can't do for any and all discussions around Magic rewards. They committed to making adjustments to the Tumeken's shadow before proposing any future best-in-slot Magic rewards.

Tortugan series finale

On 24 October 2025, Jagex released a blog revealing they have "got ideas in mind" for a third and final quest in the Tortugan quest series. However added that "plans around this are much more vague due to that quest being further away from release [than The Red Reef]".

On 25 January 2026, at the Winter Summit 2026, Mod Elena reiterated that "we already have ideas on how to do the third one," and added that "we game jammed it a little while back."[5]

Sailing quality of life

On 25 January 2026, Jagex released a blog listing quality of life changes that received a lot of support from players including:

The Tortugan storyline that we started is really interesting. We already have ideas on how to do the third one. I think like we game jammed it a little while back. It's obviously going to change but yeah. The Red Reef is then the second part of that. I'm not going to spoil to much but I'm very excited for it."
