Brief overview

Key elements in the entrance of the activity.

Preparation

In order to play the Minigame, the player needs to make herb pastes, which can be made by using clean herbs or unfinished potions on the refiner by the entrance. The player must provide these clean herbs and unfinished potions themselves.

After clicking on the refiner with resources in the player's inventory, it will start automatically processing one herb/unfinished potion every 2 ticks. The player can click on the refiner every tick to accelerate the creation of pastes to one per tick.

Once refined, the pastes can be used on the hopper just inside the main room of the minigame. The hopper can hold up to 3,000 paste of each type, though more can be held in the inventory or bank if needed.

There are three types of herb paste:

Note: Herb pastes cannot be sold or traded and are useless outside of the minigame, so try not to make more than needed. It is recommended to make paste using herbs/unfinished potions with the lowest cost per paste to improve profit/cost efficiency. For the herbs these are Tarromin at 13.4 coins per mox paste, Lantadyme at 34.23 coins per aga paste, and Avantoe at 48.87 coins per lye paste.

Minigame Gameplay

Minigame HUD

The minigame HUD.

Upon entering the main room of the minigame, the minigame's HUD will appear.

The HUD displays the names of each potion the player needs to make, as well as the process the player needs to perform on each respective potion.

The HUD also shows the amount of reagents (paste) currently stored in the hopper.

Interpreting the Potion Orders

Potions names

The name of the potion helps indicate which type of paste is used in the making of the potion.

For three-word potions, the first letter of each word indicates the type of paste to use. (e.g. Mystic mana amalgam requires 2x Mox paste and 1x Aga paste)

For two-word potions, one of the words indicates two types of paste (e.g. Aqualux amalgam requires 2x Aga paste and 1x Lye paste)

  • Note: The only arguable exception to this rule is Alco-augmentator, which requires 3x Aga paste.

The only one-word potion is Mixalot, which requires one of each paste (Mixalot).

  • Alembic / Crystalise
  • Retort / Concentrate
  • Agitator / Homogenise

Gameplay loop

  1. Using the appropriate levers near the hopper, select the three pastes needed to make the potion then take the mixture from the mixing vessel in the middle of the room.
    1. The order of the paste does NOT matter, only the quantity of each paste (ex: MMA = MAM = AMM).
  2. Repeat until all three potions are in the inventory, ready to be processed.
  3. Run to the appropriate processing station and finish the potions.
    1. While left-clicking the station, potions are used from the inventory prioritizing the ones at the beginning of the inventory.
    2. It is possible to "Use" the potion on the station to circumvent the default priority from the inventory.
  4. Send the prepared potions in the conveyor belt.
  5. A new order appears, repeat step 1.

General tips

These are some efficiency tips that improves the outcome no matter the strategy used.

Efficient pathing

Efficient pathing mastering mixology

Orders should be prepared at the same station when possible to minimise movement between stations. Using the shortest path between stations and the conveyor belt provides a more efficient outcome from the activity. This can be improved by putting the orders in the inventory in the order that they are going to be made using this path. This will minimize moving items in the inventory since only a click directly on the station will start making the correct potion.

As a general rule, this is the recommended pathing : Crystalise > Concentrate > Homogenise

Station Time to travel
Alembic / Crystalise 1 tick
Retort / Concentrate 2 ticks
Agitator / Homogenise 1 tick
Conveyor Belt 2 ticks
Total 6 ticks

By grouping orders by station, the total ticks per order should be 6 ticks as a worst case scenario (Having to visit every station in the current order).

Faster preparation

By using player input during processing, potions will be made faster and also gives small amounts of Herblore experience. The total number of ticks taken for each processing method varies based on Herblore level (faster with higher level). Without player input, the Alembic and Agitator take the same number of ticks, while the Retort is ~10% faster by default.

Workstation Process Time saved with player input Extra Herblore XP Details
Alembic Crystallising 33% Herblore 14 Click it once to begin, then do so again when the bellows fully opens for the 4th time. This results in 14 bonus Herblore experience per potion.
  • If clicked too early or too late, some progress will be deducted, but the bonus may still be obtained by clicking again on the 7th pump after the initial failure.
  • The pump count resets if the player leaves the alembic and starts pumping again, though the bonus will not be awarded more than once.
Retort Concentrating 50% Herblore 2 per tick Click it constantly every tick to speed up the process, rewarding 2 bonus Herblore experience per click. The total amount of bonus Herblore experience gained varies, as lower-level players can get more clicks in because they take a longer time to process their potions.
Agitator Homogenising 33% / 66% Herblore 14 / Herblore 16 Click it once to begin, click again within 2 ticks of the sound/visual effect (will always occurs within the first 33% of processing time) to speed up the process. With proper timing, clicks can be done in each tick of the 2-tick window, netting double bonus progress. This results in 14 bonus Herblore experience for the first click, and 2 bonus Herblore experience for the second click per potion. Each successful click saves 33% of the total processing time.
  • If the player's latency is too high and keeps missing this window regularly, it can be faster to simply not click again rather than incur the progress penalty for missing the window.

Assuming the player successfully hits all input cues, the Agitator is the fastest processing method, followed by the Retort, and then the Alembic being the slowest.

If the player finds themselves consistently missing the double Agitator cue, then the Retort is faster.

Digweed

Digweed doubles the experience and points gained from a potion. They should exclusively be used on MAL recipe, add it to an unfinished MAL potion otherwise. By adding it to an unfinished potion and holding onto it until an MAL order, this will allow more digweed to spawn, as they are unable to if one is held in the inventory.

Before 81 Herblore, it should be used on the recipe that offers the best experience.

"Bad" potions

Mistakes happen. Incorrect potion recipes/processes won't be sent on the conveyor belt if they are not in the current order.

They should be kept in the inventory until the made potion comes up into an order. They could also be sent to reset a bad order, giving reduced reward.

Simple priority strategies

Complete full orders

Making all orders makes the most out of the 40% point bonus from potions. This is the most straight forward way to play this activity. Some players might find themselves having too many Aga points, since most of the rewards cost little of them. This can be compensated by buying rewards that costs more green points than the other two (Adept potion pack, for example).

Complete non-triple orders

This method skips the recipes that gives the least experience and the least amount of points, making this more efficient for experience, since the biggest con is that it doesn't benefit as much from the 20% point bonus that comes with orders that are done at once.

Personalise order priority

It might be advantageous to skip less efficient recipes depending on objectives. Use the information on this page to define which recipes you should skip or complete. This activity is a balance between experience, point or resource efficiency.

Some strategy examples include:

  • Skipping triples, unless MAL is in the current order
  • Skipping doubles of a particular colour to get fewer points that won't be spent on rewards
  • Doing triple orders if there are at least 4-5 of the most needed colour

Overview: Resin reward ratios

In order to obtain desired rewards in the Mastering Mixology minigame, players will target quantities of Mox, Aga, and Lye. This guide will provide information on which potion orders to fulfil to optimise points in the resin types.

The table below displays the results of the 20% point bonus for double orders and 40% point bonus for triple orders fulfilled.

Points Rewards by Order Fulfilment

Ironmen with limited supplies of paste or players with reward targets in mind should consider the reward ratio when deciding which orders to fully or partially fulfil. The single-ingredient bases (AAA, MMM, LLL) are net-negative in all cases when considered on their own. However, in conjunction with higher-reward orders, the contribution to the total reward ratio of the order may be net-positive.

Base Reward Ratio
Single Double Triple
Mox Aga Lye Mox Aga Lye Mox Aga Lye
AAA 0 0.66 0 0 0.8 0 0 0.93 0
MMM 0.66 0 0 0.8 0 0 0.93 0 0
LLL 0 0 0.66 0 0 0.8 0 0 0.93
MMA 1 1 0 1.2 1.2 0 1.4 1.4 0
MML 1 0 1 1.2 0 1.2 1.4 0 1.4
AAM 1 1 0 1.2 1.2 0 1.4 1.4 0
ALA 0 1 1 0 1.2 1.2 0 1.4 1.4
MLL 1 0 1 1.2 0 1.2 1.4 0 1.4
ALL 0 1 1 0 1.2 1.2 0 1.4 1.4
MAL 2 2 2 2.4 2.4 2.4 2.8 2.8 2.8

Note that there are three categories: single-paste, double-paste, and triple-paste.

Prioritise experience per hour

Example of inventory setup for best experience strategy.

This strategy optimizes experience gain but does require more setup than the more conventional method of simply following the orders. One can expect up to 105k experience per hour with this method, although there is no control over points gained like other methods.

  1. Setup the inventory so that every non-triple types of mix are made in advance with each different type of processing.
  2. Prepare potions that are in the current order list that are non-triple.
  3. Deposit the order on the conveyor belt 2-5 times (The premade potions in the inventory should complete the second order).

Prioritise one resin

Players looking to boost one resin reward should evaluate orders as follows, assuming they are focusing on net-positive use of the relevant paste:

Evaluation of Orders by Target Resin Reward Ratio
Order Composition Target Resin Reward Ratio Action
0 + 0 + 0 N/A Complete single
XXX + (XXX/0) + (XXX/0) 0.93 Complete single (non-target if possible)
XXX + XXX + 00X 1 Complete 00X only
XXX + 00X + 0 1.05 Complete all
XXX + XXX + 0XX 1.05 Complete all
XXX + ((00X + 00X)/(XX0 + 0)) 1.12 Complete all
XXX + 0XX + 00X 1.17 Complete all
XXX + 0XX + 0XX 1.2 Complete all
(00X/0XX) + (0/00X/0XX) + (0/00X/0XX) 1.4 Complete all
MAL + any Varies, always >1 Complete all, prefer digweed

The target resin is designated X, while non-target resin(s) are 0. A mix lacking the target paste is a lone 0. Because all double-paste mixes have the same reward ratio, 2X scenarios are interchangeable (00X+00X vs XX0 + non-target).

In simplest terms: if there is a non-single paste potion with the target paste (0XX/00X), you should always complete the whole order, except for the XXX + XXX + 00X case, in which completing only the 00X potion results in the same reward ratio, so only that potion should be made to save resources.

If there are only non-target potions, prioritise non-single paste potions to save other resources, or prioritise faster processing methods (see the Faster preparation section).

Prioritise total points

The following information assumes that the player has 81 Herblore so that all potions within the minigame are unlocked.

At a baseline, if every potion is made in every order, roughly 1.33x points per paste will be earned for all 3 of Mox, Aga, and Lye equally.

Whenever a MAL shows up in an order, it's always worth making all 3 potions in the order for the 1.4x points multiplier gained by turning in all 3 potions in an order. This ends up always increasing the total ratio of points to paste.

The best known strategy to maximize points per paste is to make every potion in an order except for single paste potions (MMM, AAA, or LLL) unless there is an MAL potion in an order.

  • When there is an MAL potion in an order, it's worth making all potions including single paste potions.

When there are only single paste potions, just make the one that is the most desirable point type to you. If there are multiple of the most desirable single-paste potion in the order, prioritise faster processing methods (see the Faster preparation section).

This results in the highest overall points per paste across all three of Mox, Aga, and Lye. Assuming point prioritization of L > M > A, using this method will yield approximately 1.39 Mox points per paste, 1.40 Aga points per paste, and 1.37 Lye points per paste.[1]

Digweed should be used only in MAL potions for maximum points per paste.
