A bucket of sap is obtained by using a knife with some types of trees, while having an empty bucket in the player's inventory.

Contrary to popular belief that sap must be obtained from an evergreen tree, there are also many trees that give sap that are not described as 'Evergreen'. These are typically the slightly taller and pointier trees, and can be told apart by their examine text, which is "A commonly found tree.", instead of "One of the most common trees in Gielinor." Sap is used in two quests: Icthlarin's Little Helper and The Eyes of Glouphrie. In Icthlarin's Little Helper, the bucket of sap is given to the embalmer. In Eyes of Glouphrie, the bucket of sap is used with ground mud runes to create magic glue.

A fast way to get the sap is by using the nightmare zone minigame teleport, as there is a tree directly south of the teleport that will give sap. An alternative is by using the fairy ring AKQ to teleport to the Piscatoris hunter area where there are multiple evergreen trees immediately next to the fairy ring. A games necklace can also be used to teleport to the Burthorpe Games Room; from there, the player can run south until they reach the entrance where a few evergreen trees are located on the east. Most of the trees around the Grand Exchange also give sap.

The possible trees that can be used to obtain sap are:

• Tirannwn trees
• Prifddinas trees, both variants
• Young trees in the Ardougne Zoo Unicorn pen, only the pointy variant
• Snowy trees
