Ankou can be assigned as a Slayer task at level 40 combat by various Slayer masters. They can be found in the Sepulcher of Death, Stronghold Slayer Cave, the Catacombs of Kourend, and Deepfin Mine, as well as in the Wilderness in both the Wilderness Slayer Cave and the The Forgotten Cemetery. There are five variations of normal Ankou ranging from level 75 to 98. An additional variation, Dark Ankou, only appear when fighting the boss Skotizo, but their eligibility for task kills is pro forma, as they are almost always ignored in order to kill the boss faster. Damaged Dark Ankou that automatically die after Skotizo is killed will not count for a Slayer task.

Ankou attack with a relatively inaccurate melee attack that has a max hit from 8 to 10. Protect from Melee can be used to negate all damage.

Ankou are undead, therefore the Salve amulet and its variations can give a bonus to the player's accuracy and damage. The bonuses of the Salve amulet do not stack with the bonuses given by the Slayer helmet or Black mask. It is advised to check a Dps calculator with the player's current stats and other gear to determine if the Slayer helmet or the Salve amulet should be used.

Unextended Ankou tasks are fairly fast even when using melee in single combat. In the Multicombat areas of the Wilderness Slayer Cave and the Catacombs of Kourend, they are potentially viable as a Burst, Barrage, or Venator Bow task, although even an Extended task will be exhausted quickly by this method. The effects of the Salve necklace do not apply to monsters other than the target when using area of effect spells.

A Cannon may used against Ankou in all locations except the Catacombs of Kourend for an even faster task at a higher cost.

Ankou have a modest drop table, but will yield dozens of Death runes and Blood runes in a typical task. In the Catacombs of Kourend, Ankou will also drop Ancient shards and pieces of the Dark totem.

As Ankou are Spectral creatures, carrying the Ectoplasmator will give a small amount of Prayer experience with each kill. Ankou are the only spectral monster to also drop Bones, so a charged Bonecrusher or Bonecrusher necklace can also be used to receive additional Prayer experience. In the Catacombs of Kourend, using the Bonecrusher will also restore a single prayer point with each kill.

If killing Ankou in the Wilderness, players should minimise risk and carry a One-click teleport. In both locations, players should be mindful of the level of the Wilderness around them, as the Ankou in the Wilderness Slayer Cave straddle level 20 and those in the Forgotten Cemetery straddle level 30. A teleport which can be used in the 20-30 range should be carried, such as the Royal seed pod. Both locations are hotspots for Player killing.
