The metal spade is a quest item used only in Recruitment Drive. It is found on the table in Miss Cheevers's trial.

It is used on a bunsen burner to remove the handle. The head is then put into a hole in the door. Adding cupric sulfate and vial of liquid will heat the spade, expanding the metal and trapping it in the hole, at which point it can then be used as a handle to open the door.

Duplicates can be obtained after it has expanded, but it serves no further use. After leaving the room, all copies in the inventory are deleted.
