The battered book, titled Book of the Elemental Shield, is a quest item used in Elemental Workshop I. It is found by searching the east bookcase in the building with a cooking range, south of the building with anvils in it in Seers' Village.

It is read to start the quest. When a knife or any slash weapon is used on it, the player will receive a battered key to get into the Workshop and the book will become a slashed book. The battered or slashed book also acts as a tool in the player's inventory to make elemental shields. After the Elemental Workshop II quest, mind shields can also be smithed.

The battered book (or the slashed book) may be one of the items on the item list, given by Thorgel, that is needed to receive a death talisman during or after Mourning's End II; however, it is not needed to finish the quest as long as you already have a death talisman or catalytic talisman.

Duplicates can be drop tricked by searching the bookcase to obtain another. If the player searches the bookcase after creating the slashed book, all copies in the player's inventory and bank are deleted. Duplicates cannot be obtained after creating the slashed book. It can also be found in the bookcase in your house after getting it from Seers' Village.

• Using any item other than a knife or slash weapon on the book displays the message You don't want to damage the book.. This is contrary to the fact that you do indeed want to damage the book by cutting it open to get the battered key.
