Gem rocks with a gas cloud would occasionally appear as part of the former exploding rock random event. Attempting to mine the rock would cause an explosion, turning the player's pickaxe into a broken pickaxe and dealing a small amount of damage. The broken pickaxe could no longer be used to mine and would have to be repaired by Nurmof in the Dwarven Mine, Bob in Lumbridge, or Brian in Port Sarim.
The exploding rocks were removed on 11 September 2014 as part of the optional randoms update, after it was no longer considered a useful feature for preventing bots. The numerous graphical variants correspond to the historical gem rocks that existed until the 21 January 2016 rework that changed all rocks to use the original mining rock model.
