The dark altar can be built in the altar space of the achievement gallery in a player-owned house. It requires 80 Construction to build and gives 3,888 experience when built. The player must have a hammer and a saw in their inventory to build it.
Players (including house guests) can switch their spellbook between the Arceuus spellbook and standard spellbook.
The lowest level at which the altar can be built is 75 Construction, using the +5 boost from a spicy stew. The crystal saw cannot be used to lower this requirement, as the achievement gallery room requires 80 Construction and is unaffected by the saw. However, the crystal saw can be used when upgrading the altar into an occult altar.

Trivia
- The book on the altar contains Morse code, which can be translated as "darkaess corrupts".
- This misspelling may be an intentional reference to Arceuus, as it is pronounced in a similar fashion — (dar-KAY-us).
- The "A" (▄ ▄▄▄) may simply be a mirrored misspelling of "N" (▄▄▄ ▄).
